ALWAYS ... PATSY CLINE – Though the Wagon Wheel Center for the Arts had to postpone its 2020 season until next year due to the COVID-19 pandemic, all is not lost.

A Wagon Wheel favorite show, “Always ... Patsy Cline,” featuring Jennifer Dow and Kira Lace Hawkins, will be running from opening night, Aug. 6, to Aug. 23.

Tickets are general admission and are $50 for adults, $45 for seniors ages 60 and over, $25 for students ages 13 to college, $20 for children 12 and under and $35 each for groups of 15 or more. The Aug. 1 show will be a 65-and-older only show.

The show is a fundraiser for the theater as it reopens. Tickets go on sale Tuesday at www.wagonwheelcenter.org, and the show is sponsored by Maple Leaf Farms and DePuy Synthes.

REAL WORLD MATH – Grace College mathematics professor Dr. Ryan Johnson is creating data visualizations of COVID-19 cases in Kosciusko County and other midwestern localities. Johnson collects data from state and county governments and publishes the data in easily digestible charts online at mathatgrace.github.io/COVID-Data-Kosciusko/, according to a news release we received Friday from the Winona Lake-based school.

“I started creating data visualizations because news about the pandemic sometimes felt too anecdotal or even partisan, and I wanted to view the actual data,” said Johnson. “I have found that keeping myself aware of the numbers has helped me keep a balanced perspective.”

Johnson hopes to grow the project with the help of a small group of students by mid-summer. He believes this project represents what the math program at Grace is all about.

ROKITA & RAGAN – On Wednesday, former Indiana Secretary of State and 4th District Congressman Todd Rokita announced he is seeking the Republican nomination for the Office of Attorney General at the upcoming Indiana Republican State Convention.

A total of four Republican candidates filed to seek the nomination, with the deadline being 5 p.m. Thursday.

Along with Rokita, the other candidates for A.G. are Nate Harter, Curtis Hill and John Westercamp.

“Among the Republicans running for attorney general, no other candidate has won a statewide general election twice, no other candidate has a multi-office proven record of standing behind our God-given rights. I am A-rated in defending our Constitution’s 2nd Amendment, and I have a 100% proven voting record of defending the right-to-life, no exceptions,” said Rokita in a news release that came to our office this week.

Kosciusko County Chairman Mike Ragan was quoted in the news release from Rokita’s campaign, too. He said, “The court stated in writing that our attorney general ‘committed criminal battery’ and suspended his law license. Our party must put forward a new, proven and trusted nominee, and there is no better choice than Todd Rokita.”

Readers may remember that almost two weeks ago, Ragan announced the rescheduled date and location of the 2020 Lincoln Day Dinner. Keynote speaker for the May 28 event at the Owl’s Nest Restaurant and Meeting Center in North Webster is Rokita.

This won’t be the first time Rokita has made stops in Warsaw. In May 2018, flanked by a President Donald Trump cut-out, he spoke to a local group of Republicans at Mad Anthony’s Lake City Taphouse about why he’d be the best choice to be the Republican nominee to face Democrat U.S. Sen. Joe Donnelly in that year’s fall election. In the primary, Rokita was up against businessman Mike Braun and Congressman Luke Messer, with Braun now representing the state of Indiana in the Senate.

Rokita’s news release this week also states, “Republicans have seen the Office of Attorney General change hands multiple times over the last several decades. Although the state has had three Republican attorneys general in a row, prior to that Indiana elected three Democrat attorneys general in a row, including one appointment. Republicans will likely want to ensure the voters in November have a candidate they can trust and support or the party could be in danger of losing the seat to more liberal ideologies.”

Indeed, the Democrats are hoping that with Attorney General Curtis Hill’s ongoing issues, voters across the entire state might have had enough of it and “go blue” to fill that position.

Indiana Democratic Party Executive Director Lauren Ganapini issued the following statement after Rokita entered the race to be the Republican nominee for attorney general.

“Counting on perennial candidate Todd Rokita to buoy the AG’s race is like counting on gasoline to put out a house fire. Todd Rokita’s 11th hour entrance is poised to implode what was already an embarrassing effort from Indiana Republicans. Todd Rokita will all but ensure the GOP AG’s race devolves into a bare-knuckled brawl. Indiana Republicans’ meltdown continues to make the Attorney General’s race a prime pick-up opportunity for Hoosier Democrats.”

The attorney general candidates for both parties will be chosen at conventions this summer. So stay tuned!
