A man with a lengthy rap sheet for stealing cars was busted again after taking a vehicle for a test drive and abandoning it in Illinois.

James Douglas Cable, 48, Ullin, Ill., and also showing an address in Bunker Hill, was booked in the Kosciusko County Jail at 9:21 p.m. Monday and faces for theft, a Level 6 felony; a sentence enhancement charge of theft with a prior conviction, a Level 5 felony; and a habitual offender enhancement for being convicted of three felonies within 10 years.

According to the probable cause affidavit filed April 24 in Kosciusko Superior Court II, on March 23 Kosciusko County Sheriff’s Office deputies responded to a report of an auto theft.

Upon arrival, officers spoke with a man who said he had a red 2006 Honda Civic for sale in his front yard and that a man had come and asked to test drive it. The victim told police he did not ask for an identification from the person before allowing them to test drive the car. The victim also said the man never came back.

The following day, officers with the Southern Illinois University Police Department advised that the vehicle was found abandoned, but that they were able to determine that Cable was a suspect because a Hardee’s receipt with his name on it had been left in the vehicle. Detectives then got security camera footage from Hardee’s at the time of the receipt.

Police created an eight-person photo line-up that included Cable and asked the vehicle owner to identify the person who test drove his vehicle. The man positively identified Cable, the affidavit states.

Cable was convicted of five felonies in Kosciusko County courts. In 2005, he was convicted for auto theft; 2008, auto theft; 2014, failing to register as a sex or violent offender; 2016, theft; and in 2017, he was convicted for theft.

Cable’s bond was set at $10,250.
