Kirstyn Yoder is the 2019-20 Tippecanoe Valley High School valedictorian. The daughter of Christopher and Tracy Yoder, she plans to attend Purdue University in the fall with a double major in actuarial science and statistics and a minor in business management.
At TVHS, Kirstyn was the National Honor Society president, involved in the Kosciusko Youth Leadership Academy, softball, Academic Team, Girls Who Code Club and the Leo Lions Club treasurer. She was also named one of Kosciusko County’s 2020 Lilly Scholars.
Quintin B. Allen is the salutatorian. He is the son of Jacquelyn Apt and he plans to attend the University of Washington in Seattle to study paleo biology.
At TVHS, Quintin was involved the robotics team, Academic Team, National Honor Society, band, drama club and the Kosciusko Youth Leadership Academy. He was also chosen to participate in the Molecular Medicine in Action program by Riley Hospital for Children and the IU School of Medicine. Most recently, he was named an IASP Regional Academic All-Star.
TVSC Superintendent Blaine Conley said the board wishes them both the best and that they will be properly recognized for their achievements at the July 19 in-person commencement.
Conley also announced the corporation will have summer school classes for grades K-8 beginning July 7. He said more information will be forthcoming in the next few weeks and that information will also include a survey for parents to fill out to provide feedback about remote learning.
Also Monday, the board:?
• Accepted a grant for $2,500 from the AWS Foundation Mighty Money Grant. Director of Special Services and teacher Meagan Wilks applied for the grant that will provide augmentative assistive technology (AAC).
Conley said TVSC has seen an increased number of students with severe communication expressive language disorders over the past few years. Those students have difficulty conveying or expressing themselves in speech, writing and/or gestures, he said. With this grant, and through the AAC technology it will provide, Conley said those students will now be able to use switches and adaptive toys to promote engagement with curriculum-based activities, feel included with peers and increase independence in their daily decision-making abilities. The AAC technology will be provided to the students at Mentone Elementary School.
• Accepted a grant for $532 from a donors choose grant to purchase eight digital microscopes to be used in the science department at the middle school. Conley said the science department is still using some microscopes that were purchased before his hiring in 1990 and the cost of purchasing new is enormous.
• Heard an update on the softball field that included painting should be finished by the end of this week, weather permitting.
The next regular meeting of the Tippecanoe Valley School Board is 6 p.m. June 15 at Mentone Elementary School.
