A Pierceton man who claimed Hitler was trying to take him to a gas chamber is in jail after fighting officers who were trying to take him to the hospital for help.

Aaron Alan Shepherd, 26, of 8275 E. Ryerson Road, Pierceton, was booked in the Kosciusko County Jail at 1:10 p.m. Tuesday and faces charges for battery causing bodily injury to a law enforcement officer, a Level 5 felony; resisting law enforcement, a Level 6 felony; and resisting law enforcement, a Class A misdemeanor.

According to the probable cause affidavit filed Feb. 20 in Kosciusko Superior Court III, on Feb. 8 Kosciusko County Sheriff’s Office deputies responded to a call of an unwanted person in the Train Depot.

Upon arrival, police made contact with Shepherd, who told them “Hitler was behind it all and he was not going back to the freezer or gas chamber,” according to court papers.

Police had recently spoken with Shepherd’s father on the phone, who said Shepherd has a history of mental illness and was not taking his medication.

Police asked Shepherd to walk and talk with them to try to sort things out, according to the affidavit. Shepherd sat down on the sidewalk at that point and refused to move. Police asked Shepherd if he would like to be taken to the Bowen Center or to Parkview Hospital to get some help.

“Aaron put his hands on top of his head, got down on his knees and said to shoot him,” according to the affidavit.

Police then told Shepherd he was going to be placed in handcuffs and taken to the hospital for an evaluation. While the officers were escorting Shepherd to the squad car, according to court papers, Shepherd kicked Winona Lake Police officer Dave Swain in the chest and spit in Swain’s face. During the scuffle, Shepherd’s leg hit the car door, causing it to hit KCSO Deputy Brian Nault in the head.

According to the affidavit, when Nault was transporting Shepherd to the hospital, Nault began experiencing numbness in his arms, tingling in his hands and his vision became blurry. Nault was treated at the hospital and diagnosed with a possible concussion.

Shepherd’s bond was set at $10,500.
