Warsaw Plan Commission on Monday approved land on Center Street to be used for a 72-unit senior living neighborhood project.

The project, at 802 Center St., Warsaw, combines 12 lots to create one 2.37-acre lot that will be turned into the 72-unit senior living housing.

City Planner Jeremy Skinner said the project has been in the works for a couple of years and the city has been working with Englewood, a development group out of Indianapolis, to put this project together.

The cost of the acquisition of 800, 801 and 802 Center Street was $300,000, to which Skinner said Englewood has found funding for through the Indiana Housing & Community Development Authority (IHCDA).

Skinner said the housing will essentially be the same premise as Retired Tigers.

“It’s based on your income, so you do pay rent, but you pay a percentage of your income,” Skinner said. He expects construction to begin soon.

Since the meeting was a public hearing – and held virtually – board members gave out a phone number and an email for the public to reach out if they had any comments for or against the project. The public was given 4-1/2 minutes to make a comment; none did.

The next Warsaw Plan Commission meeting is 7 p.m. June 8 at City Hall.
