Two men are being charged with burglary after the first man was caught and admitted through jail phone calls he “took the rap for both.”

Jeremy Louis Coburn, 40, of Syracuse, and also showing an address in Goshen, was booked in the Kosciusko County Jail at 10:02 p.m. Friday and faces charges for burglary, a Level 5 felony; and theft, a Level 6 felony.

Tristen Terry, 34, of 9688 E. Excalibur Place, Cromwell, is facing a Level 5 felony burglary charge and two Level 6 felony theft charges stemming from this incident, according to court papers.

According to the probable cause affidavit filed Friday in Kosciusko Superior Court I, on Nov. 6 deputies with the Kosciusko County Sheriff’s Office responded to a call regarding a possible stolen Kubota tractor, valued at $1,400, from a residence.

Video surveillance at the property showed a pickup truck backing into the lot at 1:04 a.m. the morning of the theft, court papers state. Also on Nov. 6, KCSO detectives received a call that the stolen Kubota had been advertised on Facebook by Terry, looking to trade the tractor for a vehicle.

Detectives were able to confirm the tractor Terry was trying to trade was the stolen Kubota, the affidavit states.

On Nov. 8, detectives responded to Loose Moose Motor Sports in reference to the theft of items from the property. Video surveillance showed that at 3:10 a.m. a dark-colored vehicle arrived, rammed the steel gate to access the property and then attempted to tow a black 2017 Rebel West Powersports UTV off the property, but the tow strap breaks.

A short time later, a “lifted” pickup truck arrives at Loose Moose. When video surveillance captured the truck leaving, according to the affidavit, the truck was pulling a trailer that contained the UTV and a snowmobile, along with several other loose items. The value of the snowmobile is more than $5,000 and the value of the UTV is $18,895, according to court papers.

When police left Loose Moose to begin looking for the suspect vehicle, a resident flagged them down and said he had discovered tracks in his yard along with broken vehicle parts.

Detectives posted those vehicle parts on social media, to which they received tips that it looks like a vehicle belonging to Coburn, the affidavit states.

When police went to Coburn’s residence and searched the property, they allegedly found snowmobile tracks and spoke with family members who said Terry had been staying with them for about a week and had made trades with Coburn. Family members of Coburn’s also said they saw Coburn riding the snowmobile and that Coburn had the trailer from Loose Moose as well.

On Nov. 20, police spoke with Terry, who, according to court documents, admitted he took everything and that it took him several trips to get it all.

However, after being booked in KCJ for those charges, he called a woman and later called Coburn, stating he took the blame for everything and that Coburn has nothing to worry about.

Coburn’s bond was set at $10,250. Court records show that Coburn also has two open felony theft cases in Elkhart County.
