MENTONE – A discussion on the Mentone News Facebook page about residents having chickens within town limits was brought up during the council meeting Wednesday.

Councilwoman Shelly Krueger said she did some research and found there are some towns that do allow it, including Goshen.

Councilman Tim Croy said the town discussed the idea a few years ago and at the time it was a no-go, but he realizes times have changed and he’d be willing to pose the question on the Mentone News Facebook page to see what kind of response it gets.

Croy said he went through the comments already posted on the Facebook page on the subject and some of the commentors were from Mentone and some weren’t.

Krueger said she would prefer that if anyone provides input, it should be Mentone residents. She said she knows of two or three people who would like to have them.

“I know originally the issue was a disagreement between a couple people and that was the reason it was shot down,” Krueger said.

She noted the town council would have to write up an ordinance regarding chickens if the town decided to allow it.

Krueger said one reason people want to have chickens is for fresh eggs.

Town Council President Jill Gross suggested the town council wait to see what kind of input the town gets. If there’s enough input, then the council will have to look into all the regulations, stipulations and how to enforce it.

Krueger updated the town council on the farmers market in Mentone.

Krueger said she talked to her vendors and they wanted to open. Usually opening the weekend of Mother’s Day, it was decided to push the opening of the farmers market until the following week, May 16 from 8 a.m. to noon.

Croy updated the council on the Mentone Youth League.

He said the league had refunded everyone’s money, but now they’re starting what the league is calling a “Sandlot League.”

The only cost would be to pay for a shirt and the league is looking to start June 15.

The youth league put out a questionnaire out on their Facebook page to see who would be interested in joining and people can respond to that or send an email to [email protected].

“They’d like feedback from the community on that,” Croy said.

The annual town cleanup also was discussed.

The date is May 20 and there will a seven-bag pick-up limit per house.

Items that will not be accepted will be yard waste, tires, anything containing or having contained freon, propane tanks, gas cans, concrete, brick, rock dirt, ashes, automotive batteries and electronic items.

Paint cans must have lids off and the paint has to be dry. Only one piece of furniture will be picked up. Construction material must be tied securely in easy-to-handle bundles.

Any other items not mentioned may be taken at the discretion of the hauler. It will be the responsibility of the homeowner to pay and people can call Valley Sanitation at 574-893-7070 to schedule an extra pick-up.

The next council meeting will be at 6:30 p.m. June 3.
