LifeTouch Offers Gift Cards To Those In Need During Coronavirus Closings

Jeff France, director of the Center at 2510 E. Center St., Warsaw, explained, “We’re just trying to reach out to our community. We had a very generous donation, plus some money we had prior to this for helping our community, so last week we were able to purchase about 110 $50 grocery cards. So we got them from Owen’s and Aldi’s. And then we have 20 gas cards from the Pit Stop. So we promoted this on our social media for people who are affected by all this shutdowns, layoffs (because of the coronavirus pandemic).”
The gift cards were handed out starting at 3 p.m. Monday until 5 p.m. or until gone.
“So we’ll pass them out until they’re gone, and then with the new state mandate, we’re not sure if we’ll be here next week, but this week, for the next two hours, hopefully we’ll have a lot of people come through,” France said shortly before 3 p.m. Monday.
At noon Monday, Indiana Gov. Eric Holcomb ordered Hoosiers to remain in their homes except when they are at work or for permitted activities. The stay-at-home order takes effect at 11:59 p.m. Tuesday, March 24 and ends at 11:59 p.m. Monday, April 6, though it could be extended if an outbreak warrants it.
If for some reason all the gift cards weren’t handed out Monday, France said if more cash donations came in, they would purchase more gift cards to give away. If people can’t travel due to the state mandate, France said they’d hold on to the gift cards until “when life gets back to normal, whatever normal is, when that is, then we’ll be here because people will still be affected.”
He said, “We can always help people after all of this is all said and done. We want to help now and afterward as well as we can.”
The gift cards were given out to anybody who showed up, no questions asked.
“We just promoted it: if you’ve been laid off or just struggling, we’re here to help,” France said. “We’re just paying it forward. We’re here to serve our community and this is one way we can do that.”
If anyone wants to contribute financially so LifeTouch can continue handing out the gas and grocery gift cards, France said they can call 574-269-7990 and leave a message that they want to help.
“Then we’ll buy more cards and continue this for as long as we can,” he said.
LifeTouch is a nonprofit Biblically-based counseling center, so all gifts are tax-deductible. It uses a sliding scale so that it never has to turn people away due to their inability to pay. “We’re here to help people,” France said.
