AKRON – Tippecanoe Valley School Board approved a COVID-19 employee compensation resolution during its school board meeting Monday.

The school corporation will use eLearning  and waiver days until spring break “and that’s going to be 14 days for us,” said Tippecanoe Valley Schools Superintendent Blaine Conley. “(The resolution) gives us the ability to pay our employees” who will not be physically on campus working during that time.

The resolution authorizes Conley to make or negotiate such changes to pay, benefit and leave policies as Conley deems necessary to help employees who suffer financial hardship as a result of the coronavirus, the resolution says. It also directs the school corporation administration to review the “impact of any school closing and/or if the superintendent deems any other measures necessary to assist employees as a result of other circumstances related to COVID-19,” as well as authorizes the school corporation to take “all other actions necessary or desirable to carry out the intent of this resolution.”

The school corporation also approved three grants.

The largest grant was the Indiana Department of Educational Learning - Community Advisory Grant.

The $50,000 grant helps districts to strategically develop a plan for technology in the classroom, according to information about the grant. With the grant, the school corporation will review current practices in STEM education and implement one or more of three strands into the education, which are instruction and learning, leadership and development and college and career readiness.

With some of the grant money, the school corporation will have an Innovative STEM Community Advisory Summit in the fall with leaders from industries such as agribusiness, ag-bioscience, farmers and educators “all at the same table,” said Lori Tilden-Geiger, director of marketing, public relations and grants, “and we’ll tell them what we have to teach and they’ll tell us what their industry needs us to teach our students related to STEM.”

The school board also was updated on the softball facility project.

“Right now, you can’t see much difference out there, but there has been some work inside,” Jim Mitterling, project manager for the softball facility project, said.

Work that has been done includes some block tilling, work on the door frames and hardwire. Windows and a coiling door for the concession area have ordered, but Mitterling said he didn’t know what the delivery date would be.

Work on the sanitary line has been started. The water and sewer lines have not been delivered as of Monday. Once those two lines come in, work on work the water line will start.
