Formerly from Oswego, Wendel was born on March 1, 1925, in Westmoreland, Tenn., to Olie H. and Annie F. Williams Gregory.
Wendel proudly served his country with a World War II Victory Medal in the U.S. Army 48th Field Artillery Battalion with an honorable discharge in 1947. He then enlisted into the U.S. Air Force during the Korean Conflict with the 803 Motor Vehicle Squadron and Air Base Group with an honorable discharge in 1953. Wendel married Ollie Jean Brown in June of 1951; she preceded him in death in October 1987. In January of 1991, he was united into marriage with Sylvia Cloud, who survives. He retired from the United Telephone Company in 1985 to enjoy his love of hunting and fishing. He was a member of the Dutchtown Brethren Church, Warsaw.
Wendel leaves behind his loving wife, Sylvia, of Jones/Union, Mich.; daughters, Linda (Larry) McCleary, of Warsaw; Brenda (Ken “Bambi”) Collins, of Leesburg; sons, Matthew (Rhonda) Cloud, Mark (Debra) Cloud, both of Michigan; nine grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, three brothers and a sister.
Celebration of life will be held at Dutchtown Brethren Church, 4057 E. CR 300N, Warsaw, on Saturday, March 21 at 11:30 a.m. with Pastor Jack Worth officiating. Burial will be held at a later date.
Arrangements for the family are entrusted to McHatton-Sadler Funeral Chapel, Warsaw.
