Cancellations and postponements for schools and a myriad of local events were announced Friday.

Many of the announcements came after Indiana Gov. Eric Holcomb Thursday announced some additional steps the state will take to reduce the spread of COVID-19 in the state. Those steps included non-essential gatherings must be limited to no more than 250 people, school corporations will be provided with a 20-day waiver of the required 180 instructional days for use as needed for the remainder of the academic year and child care and adult day care facilities should institute social distancing and minimize large gatherings.

A total of 12 Hoosiers tested positive for COVID-19 through Indiana State Department of Health (ISDH), the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and a private laboratory, as of late Friday morning.

Friday afternoon, President Donald Trump called a national emergency on the coronavirus.

The area cancellations/postponements announced up to deadline Friday night include:

• On Friday, Warsaw Community Schools Superintendent Dr. David Hoffert announced that WCS will close on Monday, March 16 through spring break (April 6-10). A calendar and eLearning plan has been created. Additional details including a Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) document may be found on the district’s website. Updates will be posted at warsawschools.org.

• Wawasee Community School Corporation made the decision to close for on-site education on Monday, March 16 through the end of spring break (April 10th). This means there will be no student activities or practices after Friday, March 13 through April 11.

A release states, “While in-class learning is our preferred and best method to deliver instruction, we are grateful that we have an avenue through eLearning to continue the educational process. For students who do not have connectivity, packets will be delivered so that those students can continue their learning.”

Wawasee Community Schools will make use of seven waiver days (no instruction) from the Indiana Department of Education and seven eLearning days during this time. eLearning days are March 17, 19, 23, 25, 27, 31 and April 2. Spring break will be April 3-10 as planned.

For students who do not have access to breakfast and/or lunch, free breakfasts and free lunches will be available to any child age 18 and under from 7 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday-Friday, at the front office of North Webster School, Syracuse School and Milford School.

• Tippecanoe Valley School Corporation officials announced a schedule that all of its schools will follow. Students will gather and organize all of their belongings and all medications to take home at the end of the school day on Monday. Additional information regarding the following schedule will be forthcoming in the next week:

– Monday, March 16, two-hour delay, school in session

– Tuesday, March 17, waiver day, teachers and staff report

– Wednesday, March 18, waiver day, teachers and staff report

– Thursday, March 19 and Friday, March 20, eLearning

– March 23-27: Monday, Wednesday, Friday are eLearning days; and Tuesday and Thursday are waiver days.

– Monday, March 30; Wednesday, April 1; and Thursday, April 2 are eLearning days; Tuesday, March 31 and Friday, April 3 are waiver days.

– April 6-10, spring break.

• Whitko Community School Corporation announced it is making preparations to begin distance learning.

Beginning now, students will no longer be allowed at Whitko buildings for their regular learning day. This also means all sports, practices, programs and events are being postponed or cancelled. Whitko will have a full listing of cancellations later, but for now, it is officially closed due to COVID-19. However, Whitko will use distance learning to provide an academic experience. The distance learning days will be Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday of each week, with the exception of spring break, which is April 6-10. Whitko is meeting to finalize what those days will look like.

For now, Whitko will begin distance learning on Tuesday, March 17 and continuing through April 10, with traditional classes back in session on April 13.

• Triton School Corporation is taking Monday through Thursday off. Spring break starts Friday. Classes will resume March 31. Triton will reassess March 23 to determine if classes will be delayed longer.

In the meantime, Triton is deep-cleaning classrooms, the campus and buses.

• Manchester Community Schools issued a release that states while there currently are no reported or suspected cases of the novel coronavirus at MCS or in Wabash County, Manchester Schools is closing all schools and cancelling all school-related activities through April 13. More details will be shared with families in the coming days concerning extended eLearning procedures, as well as details on food distribution.

• Grace College cancelled on-campus classes and temporarily closed residence halls until April 13 in response to the novel coronavirus (COVID-19). Classes are cancelled through Tuesday, March 17 to prepare for remote instruction. Classes will move to remote delivery beginning Wednesday, March 18.

Grace College will remain open for faculty and staff only. Most special events on campus will be cancelled, with individual announcements pending. All Grace College athletic events, including practices, are suspended until April 1.

• The Catholic Schools Office has announced the closing of all of its 43 Catholic Schools within the 14-county service area effective Monday and for a minimum of three weeks. A set date has not been established for the re-opening of the schools. Additionally, all afterschool and extracurricular activities are suspended until further notice.

Beginning March 16, school officials will be working with staff members from all 43 schools to finalize plans for eLearning or distance learning for our students. Parents should watch for communications from their principals for more information. The diocese has also created a webpage for the most current directives and resources for all of its diocesan parishes and schools: www.diocesefwsb.org/covid-19.

The Diocese of Fort Wayne-South Bend extends prayers for every student, faculty and staff member.

• The Riley and Foster Dodgeball Tournament scheduled for 7 p.m. Saturday in the Warsaw Community High School Tiger Den is postponed until further notice. The event was to benefit Riley Hospital for Children and local foster children.

• Warsaw Community Development Corporation announced that April First Friday Summer Camp-Round Up scheduled for April 3 has been cancelled. If you have registered and paid to participate in the April event, you may roll over your registration to participate in May or any other First Friday event in 2020.

As of now, WCDC still plans on hosting First Friday in May and hopes to include the Summer Camp Round-Up in that event. Updated details about the event will be released once they have been confirmed. Contact WCDC at 574-267-6311 or [email protected] for more information.

• Friday’s Legislative Review Session with Senator Ryan Mishler and Representatives David Wolkins and Curt Nisly, hosted by the Kosciusko Chamber of Commerce and Warsaw Rotary Club, was postponed. • The Builders Association of Kosciusko Fulton Counties canceled the 2020 Home and Outdoor Show. The show was to take place March 20-22 at the Kosciusko County Fairgrounds. If you have any questions, call the Builders Association office at 574-267-6125.

• The board of directors of Kosciusko REMC decided to suspend the cooperative’s annual meeting, currently scheduled for March 28 at Christ’s Covenant Church. KREMC will continue to monitor the situation to determine if the meeting can be rescheduled and held on a later date, and will keep members informed of any additional decisions.

KREMC is urging all members to be cautious and use alternative ways to pay their bills to avoid possible exposure to the virus. The cooperative reminds members they can access their account at kremc.com and through the KREMC app. Payments can also be made over the phone or at the payment kiosk located in the KREMC parking lot.

• The North Manchester Public Library decided to  postpone the St. Paddy's Golden Egg Hunt. Mark your calendars for Saturday, June 13 at 10 a.m. for a Summer Reading Themed Egg Hunt event.

As of this time, NMPL has no plans to close or alter hours or services. It intends to continue the rest of our regularly scheduled in-house programming for the time being, according to a news release.

• The Honeywell Foundation in Wabash is suspending all events at Foundation properties including the Honeywell Center, Honeywell House, Eagles Theatre, Dr. James Ford Historic Home and Charley Creek Gardens through April 9.

• The Snow for IN District 18 Community Coffee Chat on March 18 has been canceled.
