I believe you can connect to anywhere on earth by cooking with spices that originate from that location. The spices grown in a particular country or region bring distinctive smells and tastes. It defines who they are and what they offer to the world. I often use many spices and herbs in my cooking and try to expand my knowledge of world cuisine quite often.

I would love to introduce to you our only Northern Indiana spice shop.

You do not have to go to Chicago or Indianapolis for your cooking needs. Spice Merchants of Winona Lake provides a vast array of world flavors through 85 spice blends, dried herbs, salts, peppers, sugars and over 100 types of loose leaf teas.  They also sell specialty chocolates, grains and gift sets.

My favorite spice blend is Thai coconut. This seasoning is super convenient as it is already prepared with salts, pepper and chilis. I simply add it to roasted chicken or soup and just like that dinner is made. It also tastes super fresh.

Chris and Jerry Ouding have owned Spice Merchants of Winona Lake since 2013 after becoming inspired by a Spice Merchant shop in Saugatuck, Mich. They found the ingredients to be a game changer in their cooking at home.

They chose the community of Winona Lake because the idea of a spice shop worked perfectly with the setting of The Village at Winona. Winona Lake provides many activities for tourists and locals, and it draws visitors from all over the world with Warsaw (the orthopedic capital) close by.

The Oudings especially enjoy the summer in Winona because there is so much going on between tourist season and activities on the lake.

“The people are friendly and welcoming,” said Chris and Jerry.

They personally recommend Saugatuck Spice Blend for its versatile bold flavor on any red meat. Their favorite tea blend is Caribbean Breeze. It truly transports your imagination to a fruity island and the blue skies of the tropics.

I personally recommend Spice Merchants for their blends and teas. The health benefits are numerous, and there are so many varieties and flavors from which to choose. When shopping local, and specifically at this store, you are enhancing your life in flavor, nutrition and much more. Smelling the aromas and products is encouraged.

Come on over to The Village at Winona and enjoy the shops and the town. They have so much to offer you!
