ELKHART – Luke Adamiec stepped to the free throw line with 1:50 left in overtime during the Class 4A Section 4 semifinal versus facing a 51-50 deficit. The 6-4 junior, who plays above the rim and draws plenty of fouls each game as coming off a 0-for-5 night at the free throw line against Goshen in Wednesday’s first round win.

Friday was a new day for the junior forward, who easily nailed both free throws, making it 6 for 7 on the night to put Warsaw ahead for good, 52-51, and the boys from Lake City sent hall-of-fame former Tiger coach Al Rhodes and his Penn Kingsmen home for the season 58-56.

The Tigers advance to the sectional final aiming to unseat defending 2019 sectional champ and current Northern Lakes Conference champion Northridge (20-5) Saturday night at North Side Gymnasium.

Adamiec was still bouncing in place when he discussed his trip to the line.

“I was working hard in practice yesterday since I didn’t hit any against Goshen. Their big guys played tough, but we wanted it more, and we got the W tonight, so I feel very good.”

Adamiec also added two consecutive baskets in the third quarter to help narrow Penn’s’ largest lead of the game, 32-24, to just 38-35 after three stanzas.

Coach Doug Ogle added, “Pat O’Connell came to me and asked me if he could work with Luke on free throws. He’s our freshman assistant coach, and It’s nice when you have a guy like Pat who can make the difference and help the team.”

The game showcased five lead changes six ties. Each team had streaks in the second and third quarters but maintained their composure to keep each quarter tied. The Kingsmen entered the fourth quarter leading 38-35.

Blake Marsh reeled off a coast-to-coast steal for a layup and an 8-foot jumper to give the Tigers the lead 39-38 at 6:24, fueling a 10-4 run to start the first 4 ½ minutes of the final frame. Two inside scores from 6’4” senior Jaylen Coon were part of the surge.

“Coon was big. He had a great week of practice and I’m really happy for Jaylen.”

Known more for his outside shooting, Coon was a force inside on this evening. Earlier in the contest Warsaw trailed the Kingsmen 18-7 when the sharpshooting senior altered Penn’s momentum with an above the rim basket with the look of a dunk but ended with a soft touch. He added a net-ripping 3 to put the Tigers ahead for the first time 19-18 with 1:52 left in the first half.

Ogle praised his boys’ efforts, particularly in the second half, “I was very pleased with our poise, and we played very well in the second half. We rebounded better in the second half. We did everything better in the second half.”

Kyle Dawson, a 6-5 sophomore who was part of the Tiger football defense thar thwarted Penn’s sectional title aspirations in November, was called upon again to defend on the hardwood. Penn’s Derek Derda came into the game averaging 18 points a night. The small post player who plays bigger than he is had most of his troubles during Dawson’s eight minutes on the floor.

“(He) was a difference maker. I decided yesterday morning that I was going to use him to stop Derda inside,” said Ogle. “I told Drew McCleary I needed to dress Kyle because I can only dress twelve. I was very appreciative of drew, he’s a very selfless young man, to give Kyle his varsity spot – I can only dress twelve.”

Warsaw had four players in double figures, led by Coon’s 15 points along with Brork Poe (14 points, 5 rebounds), Adamiec (14 points 10 rebounds), and Marsh (10 points 3 steals). Jackson Dawson and Wyatt Amiss (2 points each) and Keagan Larsh (1 point) rounded out the Tigers’ scoring output.

Penn was led by freshman guard Markus Burton (16 points) and Derda (11 points, seven below his average), and big man Tobias Patton (9 points), who demonstrated quickness and length on defense.

The Tigers, who lost their last three regular season games, have put together two straight in the post season, both in overtime.

Ogle put it concisely. “We have some momentum here.”

Get To Know The Team: Warsaw Captains Q&A
Earlier this week, I had the privilege of going to a Warsaw football practice and speaking with four of the team’s five captains. With so much having been written in recent weeks about their performance on the field, and rightfully so, I wanted to peel back the curtain a bit and ask them some questions about themselves. Each of the four players were asked the same eight questions. Below are each of their answers.
