A man is in jail facing charges in Elkhart County and in South Dakota, after a police pursuit early Saturday that ended in Kosciusko County.

According to the Elkhart County Sheriff’s Department, Ronald Elkins, 35, is facing charges of resisting law enforcement/resisting law enforcement with a vehicle, possession of a handgun without a license, unauthorized entry of a motor vehicle used in commission of a crime and theft of a firearm.

According to Captain Eric Duven of the Aberdeen, S.D., Police Department, Elkins had a Brown County, S.D., warrant  for his arrest for a court order violation and a violation of a protection order in Aberdeen.

“Ronald Elkins, who was being sought (Friday) by (Aberdeen Police Department) in reference to a Brown County warrant and suspicion of vehicular theft and violation of protection order, was apprehended in Indiana,” according to a Aberdeen Police Department Facebook post.

The Aberdeen police were looking for Elkins and had a ping on the phone that was thought to be his Thursday. However, Duven said that phone was found to be a friend’s. The Aberdeen police were unable to locate Elkins and there were no indications he was in Aberdeen Friday.

Elkins is a suspect in the theft of two vehicles in Brookings, S.D., said Derrick Powers, assistant chief of the Brookings police department.

Some time recently, Brookings police were called regarding a holdup alarm at a convenience store after Elkins made comments indicating he was holding the store up, said Powers. A pursuit followed, where Elkins’ vehicle spun out of control and he fled on foot.

The police later received a report of a stolen vehicle, Powers said. The department then received a report of a second stolen vehicle and the police found the first stolen vehicle not far from where the second vehicle was stolen. The second vehicle was a 1999 gold Ford F150 believed to be used in the pursuit that ended early Saturday in Warsaw.

Saturday’s pursuit was called in at 12:05 a.m. from Elkhart County and ended at 12:13 a.m. in Kosciusko County with Elkhart County officers following a stolen vehicle.

The pursuit came southbound into Kosciusko County on Ind. 15, said Det./Sgt. Brad Kellar, public information officer for the WPD, on Sunday. Warsaw officers assisted other agencies in the pursuit and WPD performed a “rolling roadblock in the area” of U.S. 30 and Ind. 15 (Detroit Street) to stop the fleeing vehicle, a gold 1999 Ford F150 with South Dakota license plates.

Elkins was then arrested by the ECSD after the pursuit ended.
