Democrat Antony Garza filed paperwork in Indianapolis today to run for Kosciusko Superior Court III judge.
Garza, 48, was born and raised in Warsaw and attended Indiana University School of Law. He’s been practicing law since 1997 and running his own practice since 2010.
Prior to opening Garza Law Office, Garza served as deputy prosecutor from 2002 to 2006 in the Kosciusko County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office. He then practiced criminal defense, family law and handled civil matters at Miner & Lemon.
Garza said he was assigned to Superior Court III during his time as deputy prosecutor, and that he believes he has more experience in general than Miner.
“I’ve been practicing longer, and I have more experience practicing in that court,”?Garza said.
Garza said in his private practice, he’s handled high-level felony cases, including in Superior Court III, and he’s handled cases that get taken to jury trial along with OWI charges.
“On the civil side, I’ve handled family law,” he said.
Superior Court III?is a busy court that handles mostly civil litigation but will see a fair amount of felony OWI and domestic battery cases.
The docket is full – and backed up – in Superior III, and in the primary election the candidates spoke often about their ideas to make the court more efficient.
Garza’s plans are to follow the lead of what Superior Court II?Judge Torrey Bauer did with his court by working with defense counsel and prosecutors.
“When Judge Bauer worked with the prosecutor, he streamlined that court,” Garza said.
Garza said his filing so close to the Tuesday deadline was because it was a big decision to make.
But now that he has, he wants voters to know what he stands for.
“I stand for equal access to the courts and equal treatment,” Garza said. “I believe making sure people get a fair shake.”
Garza encourages people to get out and vote. He said he knows there are people in the community who can vote, but don’t. Getting his message out will come in the near future as he gets his committee put together, he said.
Brian Smith, Kosciusko County Democratic Party Chair, is excited to get Garza on the ballot.
“Tony is incredibly involved in our community,” Smith said. “He has served on multiple boards here in Kosciusko County. He’s also been a local attorney for over 20 years. He’s going to bring a wealth of experience to the courtroom, and so he will be a great addition in Superior Court III for the citizens of Kosciusko County.”
