The Indiana Special Olympics Summer Games will not take place in 2020 due to the coronavirus pandemic.

The Games, scheduled for June 12-14, are the largest and high point of competition for Special Olympics athletes in the state, according to a news release from Special Olympics Kosciusko County.

The Summer Games will be replaced by a virtual experience run by Indiana Special Olympics to help athletes recreate the excitement, solidarity and joy to connect everyone to the spirit and experience of the Special Olympics.

Premiering on Facebook and streaming on the Indiana Special Olympics website on June 12 at 9 and 11 a.m. and 1 p.m., the Flame of Hope Torch Run fundraising event brings together law enforcement officers and agencies from across the state to raise money and awareness for Special Olympics athletes while practicing social distancing in their communities, stated the release.

Later on, at 7 p.m. June 12, on Facebook or streaming on the Indiana Special Olympics website, a virtual opening ceremonies and dance party will be held, signaling the official start of the 2020 Summer Games Sports & Fitness Challenge.

Beginning June 13, the virtual Sports & Fitness Challenge will begin for the athletes and will run through July 20.  Challenges will feature activities that athletes can do at home, in their neighborhoods, in parks or other public areas as allowed and while maintaining social distancing protocols.

A virtual closing ceremony and awards is planned for July 25.
