By Maddie Jo Shultz-
Pat Terrell, of the Winston Terrell Group in Indianapolis, presented the Indiana School Referendum Report.
Terrell mentioned Wawasee’s district has the lowest tax rate in the state, and that a referendum would be a useful tool in “appreciating the role of the school in the community.”
Wawasee Community School Corporation received a Views on Learning grant, which includes four Zoom conferencing accounts, 10 WiFi hotspots and $25,000 for technology purchases.
Wawasee High School student and graduating senior Evan Coblentz was elected as Indiana State FFA treasurer. The board extends congratulations to Coblentz as he will serve a one-year term before attending college.
The board approved reopening plan documents as presented on the WCSC website. These documents are available to the public; they outline day-to-day classroom procedures and home screening procedures for students.
The board also approved the financial report and school building handbooks for the 2020-2021 academic year.
Superintendent Dr. Tom Edington recommended the base daily mileage for bus transportation be increased from 60 to 75 miles per day.
In other board news:
• WCSC reported success with summer school programs, with 152 students enrolled this year.
• For online-only learning in the first trimester of the 2020-2021 school year, parents and guardians must enroll students in Wawasee Virtual School by July 31.
• The board is recommending masks for all students when they return in August. Students should wear the masks in restrooms, hallways and other common areas, but students can remove face coverings in classrooms. On school buses and in health clinics, face masks will be required.
• Commencement for the 2020 graduating class will be held Saturday at 10 a.m. Students should dress comfortably.
