Veterans Affairs Officer Rich Maron presented Rebecca Phend as the July Veteran of the Month during the Kosciusko County commissioners meeting Tuesday.

Reading from her biography, Maron said Phend was born in November of 1957 in Fort Wayne to Robert and Marjorie Phend. She grew up in South Whitley and graduated from South Whitley High School in 1976, a member of National Honor Society and the FAA.

Phend continued graduated from Saint Francis in 1987 with a major in business administration and a minor in computer science.

Phend then joined the U.S. Navy and served from 1988-1992 as an electronics technician/petty officer second class. She did her basic training and technical school basic electricity and electronics c school at Orlando Naval Training Center in Orlando, Fla. Phend had electronics technician a school at Great Lakes Naval Training Center in North Chicago, Ill., and satellite communications school and teletype repair at Fort Gordon, in Augusta, Ga.

Phend repaired and maintained radio and satellite communications equipment. She became the station duty officer at Naval Satellite Communications Facility in Norwest, Va. As the station duty officer, she supervised and trained her entire duty section, and ran and participated in readiness drills.

Phend would receive training in leadership and supervisory techniques, sexual harassment and cultural diversity.

Phend was a distinguished military honors graduate from electronics technicians “a” school, which included being a top performer of the quarter for Naval Satallite Command Facility Northwest.

Phend was honorably discharged in 1992. She came back to Kosciusko County and became the owner of Beccassage, providing massage therapy for people and animals since 1993, specializing in cancer massage and Reiki.

“She also consults with people about the proper use of herbal supplements and has done extensive research on alternative and standard medical treatments for people so they can make a wise and informative decision in regards to there health and treatment,” Maron said.

Phend is part of the adjunct faculty for Ivy Tech from 1997-2012, teaching massage and medical assisting courses.

“She enjoys working with horses and dogs and has even shown her dogs in obedience trials. She has also shown her horses in dressage, barrel racing, pole bending, English pleasure and Western pleasure,” Maron said. For years, she has worked with 4-H horse and pony clubs. “She has never been married she says my animals are my children.”
