Atwood Man Accused Of Burglarizing A Garage While Armed With A Knife

An Atwood man is in jail and is accused of being caught trying to burglarize a garage then brandishing a knife when confronted by a person at the home.

Michael Ryan Kneller, 40, of 217 E. Main St., Atwood, was booked in the Kosciusko County Jail at 3:05 a.m. June 22 and faces charges for burglary, a Level 2 felony; battery while armed with a deadly weapon, a Level 5 felony; and theft, a Class A misdemeanor.

According to the probable cause affidavit filed Thursday in Kosciusko Superior Court I, around 1:30 a.m. on June 22 North Webster police officers were notified that a burglary was occurring at a home. Kosciusko County Sheriff’s Office  Sgt. Chris Francis was called by the homeowner, had arrived at the scene and handcuffed a suspect. When North Webster police officers arrived, they were told that the victim was closing his garage door for the night and observed Kneller in the garage. When the man yelled at Kneller, Kneller fled on foot taking items from the garage, including ammunition and a golf cart battery charger, according to court papers. The victim chased Kneller down and Kneller eventually stopped then pulled out a knife and struck the man under the ribs multiple times with the knife handle.

According to court papers, the victim was able to subdue Kneller and a family member inside the home called Francis. Francis then informed Central Dispatch of the situation, arrived at the scene and handcuffed Kneller.

When police spoke with Kneller, according the affidavit, Kneller admitted he came to the garage to take items but said he believed someone else lived at the home and that the person who he believed lived there had stolen from him in the past.

According to court records, Kneller is currently on probation in Kosciusko County for a Level 6 felony theft conviction, and has also been convicted of auto theft, a Level 6 felony, in 2017; theft with a prior theft conviction, a Level 6 felony, in 2016; and possession of a controlled substance, a Class D felony, in 2012.

His bond was set at $10,250.
