Church Pantry Sees Need In Food Giveaway
By Jackie [email protected]
In a giveaway, the food pantry gets an abundance of food from food banks and other sources.
“We will go buy food with the donations people send in,” Food Pantry Director Judy Pennington said.
As far as food they had, Pennington said the food pantry picked up 18 skids of food about two weeks ago in one day.
However, the food bank doesn’t know necessarily know how much food there is going to be to give away.
“You never know when you’re going to get it, you never know how much abundance it’s going to be or anything like that,” Pennington said.
The food pantry finished a giveaway last week and got an e-mail from North Indiana Food Bank asking the food pantry to do a meat giveaway. She said that was what was being done Tuesday, along with the regular giveaway.
Northern Indiana Food Bank sent 10 skids of meat for the giveaway to help those needing meat. The giveaway also had items from the church and Milford Food Bank, Pennington said.
“It’s enough food to feed a family for at least two or three days,” she said.
“The last time we did a big (giveaway) like this, we did almost 500 families. That was 2,000 individuals in those families,” she said. She said the food pantry was probably going to give away food to 500 families, if not more, Tuesday.
In order to get food, a vehicle pulls up into the church’s parking lot. Information is taken when vehicles drive into the parking lot. One of pieces of information needed is how many members there are in the family. The food pantry put family size into two groups. The first group is having between one and four people in the family. The second group is having five or more in a family. Boxes would be fixed up with food, depending on the size of the family.
A family of four would get about 30 pounds of food, Pennington said, while a family of five or more would get 40 or 50 pounds of food. Part of the reason behind the weight was because the meats were heavy and because of the canned food.
While the giveaways are supposed to help Kosciusko County, God’s Highway does have people come from other areas like Elkhart County or Fort Wayne for the giveaway. If it’s the church’s normal pantry day, a nongiveaway day, the food pantry is supposed to tell people they can help those people that one time and to tell them about food pantries in their area.
Giveaways and the food pantry is not new to the church.
God’s Highway To Heaven Church has been around for 47 years and they’ve had a pantry for about as long.
“A lot of people didn’t even know we existed,” she said.
The giveaways themselves started a few years ago.
Pennington said there are plans on having at least two giveaways in July. The giveaways will probably be in the second week of July and the week after that, followed by a pantry in the next week. However, the dates have not been set yet. She said sometimes the food pantry doesn’t know until the day before that they are going to hold a giveaway.
