LAKEVILLE — Triton senior Whytnie Miller was named the girls recipient of the W.B. Hawkins Award during Saturday's concluding evening of the boys and girls high school basketball Bi-County Tournament at LaVille High School.

For that and her actions in supporting her teammates under difficult circumstances, Miller has  been tabbed the Times-Union Athlete of the Week for Jan. 20-25.

The honor, which includes a $1,000 scholarship, has been given annually since 2004 to one male and one female representative from teams participating in the eight-school Bi-County field.

Winners are chosen based on "work on the (court) and in the classroom, and for their ability to inspire those around them," according to the award sponsor, Teachers Credit Union.

Miller, despite suffering season-ending knee injuries both her sophomore and junior years, and a season-ending shoulder dislocation on Jan. 14 this year, has remained a supporter of her teammates during her time sidelined.

Besides being among the Trojans' top two in both scoring and rebounding this season, Miller maintains a 4.0 grade point average and has been a member of the Kosciusko Youth Leadership Academy, the science, Spanish and spirit clubs at Triton, the student council and Indiana DECA.

She becomes just the second winner from Triton of the Hawkins Award, joining Brooklyn Beatty in 2016.

Chase Ketterer of New Prairie was chosen as the boys recipient.

The honor is named for the man who served as TCU president and CEO from 1962 to 1987.
