Lady Vikings Win TRC Matchup Over Southwood

AKRON — After a crushing loss on Thursday to Rochester, the Tippecanoe Valley Lady Vikings basketball team looked to rebound and return to their winning ways. Facing a Southwood team that is coming in with a three-game win streak, it did not look like it was going to be easy.

At first, it was not.

Despite being down for most of the first half, the Lady Vikings rallied and cruised their way to a 59-26 win on Rita Price Simpson Court at Tippecanoe Valley High School.

“We were happy with our effort in the second half,” said Tippecanoe Valley girls’ basketball head coach Chris Kindig. “The last three quarters was pretty good basketball for us, hopefully that will get us back on track.”

Junior Sidney Weaver led the charge for the Lady Vikings (14-6 overall, 6-2 TRC) with 17 points. Freshman Kaydence Mellott finished with 13 points, and senior Karina Young chipped in with 10 points.

For the Lady Knights (5-15 overall, 3-5 TRC), freshman Ella Haupert had a team-high 11 points, while fellow freshman Aleia Sweet finished with seven points on the night.

Valley outrebounded Southwood 41-21, including 19 offensive boards to the visitor’s four. The Lady Vikes also handled the ball well, having it turned over to Southwood just five times.

While Kindig was pleased with the response to the early deficit, he thinks that there is much to improve on.

“I think there was still little bit of a layover from that [Rochester] game as far as our intensity,” said Kindig. “We have a lot more to do here as far as getting better, but I thought we took a step forward tonight. This could have been a struggle for four quarters, and it was not. We are a work-in-progress, but this was a good start for us tonight to get back on track,”

Southwood returns to action on Wednesday night, when they host Southern Wells.

Big things lie ahead for the Lady Vikings, as they drew NorthWood in the opening round of the  IHSAA Tournament, which begins Feb 4.

Also ahead is Senior Night, as well as Middle School Recognition Night as Valley hosts county rival Wawasee on Tuesday. Tip-off for varsity is set for around 7:45 p.m.
