Trojans, Lancers Play Lopsided Bi-County Tourney Games

LAKEVILLE — It was hard to imagine much topping the lopsided nature of the Triton girls’ 17-4 first-half against LaVille.

The LaVille boys, though, topped it in the very next game, and in fact stuffed an even more lopsided count into half as much time.

Both huge leads stood up as the Trojan ladies recorded a 33-23 victory in the opener and the Lancer guys rolled to a 53-34 victory in the nightcap of a first-round Bi-County Tournament high school basketball doubleheader Tuesday night at LaVille’s Dale Cox Gymnasium.

The Triton girls (9-11) advanced to a Thursday semifinal at LaVille against Glenn (8-12). The Falcons were a surprise 65-62 winner over Class 1A No. 5 host Oregon-Davis in another first-round game Tuesday.

The Triton boys (6-5) face O-D (1-10) in a consolation matchup Friday at LaVille.

The Lancer boys (7-4) meet Glenn (10-3) in a semifinal Friday, and the Lancer girls (1-18) play O-D (15-4) in a consolation Thursday, both at LaVille.

The Trojans never allowed a field goal in the first half as the Lancers went 0-of-7, and Triton also forced 11 turnovers before the break.

The winners’ two leading scorers wound up being players who came off the bench in sophomore Taren Yates with nine points and junior Emma Hepler with six.

“I thought the first half we did a great job defensively, rotating to where we needed to be, holding them to the zero field goals,” Triton coach Adam Heckaman said.

“Then the second half, we got lazy, got antsy, went after steals we shouldn’t have gone after instead of playing good position defense,” Heckaman continued.

The Trojans netted the first four points of the second half for a 21-4 lead as the game teetered on brutally lopsided, but then the Lancers chipped away.

They finally got their first field goal of the night at the 5:21 mark of the third quarter and closed to within 25-14 by the end of the period.

In the fourth quarter, a 5-0 LaVille run trimmed the spread to 27-19 with 3:10 remaining, but Yates scored the next basket on an underneath inbound from Jessica Soriano and Triton stayed ahead by double digits the remainder of the way.

“Everybody did some good things in spurts,” Heckaman said. “Taren came off the bench after the first quarter and sparked us. Jessica Soriano got the ball to the right place nicely when we were a little rattled late. Emma Hepler gave us some really good minutes. Our posts were great in the first half.”

Soriano dished a game-high five assists for the winners. Yates finished 4-of-5 from the field and added a pair of steals.

Lancer sophomore Trinitie Cox led all players with seven rebounds, three steals and two blocked shots to go with four points. Freshman Lucy Sherk paced LaVille in scoring with six points.

Triton fell 48-40 to host Glenn in a Nov. 6 season opener, but now gets another shot at the Falcons.

“Glenn’s very tough defensively with their man to man and switching,” Heckaman said. “Us, we saw a lot of things tonight we gotta fix before Thursday, but I thought the effort was good.”

The Lancers were stunningly efficient and relentlessly dominant in the first quarter, building a whopping 24-4 advantage.

They shot 10-of-13 from the field in the period with four made 3-pointers and committed just one turnover.

The Trojans, meanwhile, were 1-of-5 from the field and coughed up five turnovers in the opening frame.

“I thought we came out really passive offensively,” Triton coach Jason Groves said. “It led to the turnovers, led to them getting fast-break buckets. They just played at a faster pace, with more sense of urgency and more free in that first quarter, and it made a huge difference.”

LaVille also notched the first four points of the second period for a 28-4 gulf, and the Trojans got no closer than 13 points the rest of the way, that at 38-25 midway through the third period.

Lancer guard Andrew Dill led all scorers with 15 points. He made 6-of-9 shots from the field with a pair of triples, while fellow junior Bobby Good added 13 points, including 3-of-7 shooting outside the arc.

Senior guard Connor Wieczorek wreaked havoc all night for LaVille, picking up game highs of eight assists and four steals to go with seven points. Senior forward Jimmy Fischer had nine points and six rebounds.

Sophomore guard Ashton Oviedo led Triton with 10 points. Junior Keegan Westafer added eight, while senior Tyler Heckaman scored seven to go with six rebounds.

“The kids’ effort was there,” Groves said, “but we got into too big of a hole.

“I think part of it was stuff we can control,” Groves added. “We knew they were free shooters from 3, but we weren’t getting a hand up. I think we just gotta be a little tougher, gotta take the charges, get the big bucket when we need it, get on the floor when we need it. Sometimes little things make a huge difference, and sometimes attention to detail isn’t our strong point.”
