NorthWood Snaps Wawasee’s 4-Game Win Streak

The Warriors led the Panthers 22-19 at halftime before NorthWood used a strong third quarter performance sparked by its defense to win 54-38 and end Wawasee’s win streak at four (63-56 vs. Central Noble Dec. 27, 60-27 vs. Garrett and 57-44 vs. Lighthouse CPA Jan. 3, 58-52 vs. Columbia City Jan. 7).
The Warriors fell to 7-4 overall and 0-2 in the NLC while the Panthers improved to 9-3 and 1-1.
“We got a little rattled,” said Wawasee coach Jon Everingham of the third quarter that saw NorthWood out-score the hosts 14-3. “I probably should have called a couple of timeouts there. We weren’t real ball-tough in the third quarter.” Everingham saw the Panthers feed off the energy that converted turnovers into points and made for a 33-25 lead at the end of the third period. That advantage moved into double digits in the first minute of the fourth quarter and never got lower than 10 the rest of the way.
“I don’t think we came out with the energy and focus that we had in the first half (to start the second half),” said Everingham. “That cost us the game. The third quarter was it.
“We’re not a very good team coming from behind.” Everingham said his team showed some of the physical and mental fatigue of its recent stretch.
“Playing four games in seven days, I think that factored into the second half just a little bit,” said Everingham. “But I think we proved we can play with a good basketball team.
“The next step is winning one of those.”
Ethan Hardy paced the Warriors with 14 points and six rebounds.
“I’ve got to do a better job of getting him more shots,” said Everingham. “When a guy is shooting at the (high) percentage he is.
“He was dominating inside.” Everingham noted that his team started taking quick outside shots when it got behind (both teams were 1-of-12 behind the 3-point arc).
“We should have pounded it inside,” said Everingham. “We tried some high-low stuff. Unfortunately it didn’t work for us.” Wawasee also got nine points and Austin Miller and six from Keaton Dukes.
NorthWood was led by Trent Edwards (17), Jamarr Jackson (14), Josh Stratford (9) and Ian Raasch (7).
Jason Borkholder was hurt on a defensive play at the 6:44 mark of the first quarter and did not play the rest of the game. It was reported after the contest that he was hospitalized.
“Certainly our thoughts and prayers go out to him and his family that he can make a speedy recovery,” said Everingham. “We really hope he’s OK. Good kid.”
NorthWood coach Aaron Wolfe said his team rallied without one of its “senior rocks.”
“I’m really proud of how our guys had to adjust the entire defensive and offensive assignments,” said Wolfe. “When (Borkholder) went out, Josh Stratford stepped up tonight.
“He’s a senior for us. Josh ends up with nine points and six rebounds. They could not be more timely.”
Elkhart Memorial visits Wawasee and NorthWood goes to Northridge and Wawasee, both on Friday.
In junior varsity action Saturday, NorthWood defeated Wawasee 55-41.
Cade Brenner (18 points) paced the JV Panthers (10-0). Collin Robertson (11) led the JV Warriors (6-3).
