A Michigan man, who was part of a trio who used fake money at three area Walmarts, was sentenced to three years in jail Tuesday.

Isaac Young, 20, of Novi, Mich., appeared in Kosciusko Superior Court III Tuesday and was given three years in the Kosciusko County Jail, with six months executed and the rest suspended to formal probation, for a Level 5 felony of corrupt business influence and Level 6 felonies of counterfeiting and theft.

Noble County Judge David Laur, who was filling in for Judge Joe Sutton, said Young could serve his time through work release or Kosciusko County Community Corrections if he qualifies and ordered $1,123.38 be paid in restitution to Walmart.

On Sept. 6, 2018, Warsaw police received a report that $1,100 worth of fake $20 bills were used at Walmart to purchase items then returned for money.

Police determined the three men – Young; Filmel Williams Jr., 18, Brownstown, Mich.; and Titus Mundy, 19, Inkster, Mich. – also ran this same scheme at Walmarts in Rochester, Plymouth, South Bend and Mishawaka.

Young was convicted Thursday in?Marshall County court for theft and counterfeiting, both Level 6 felonies, and sentenced to 18 months, with 16 months suspended to probation. A case for similar charges is pending in Cass County.

“It was really stupid to do it in three different counties,” Laur told him. “You’re in three different courts, getting three different sentences. It’s one thing to grab something and stick it in your sweatshirt and try to get out of the store. It’s another to do a scheme.”

Young’s sentence will run consecutive to his Marshall County sentence, and part of his plea agreement requires him to testify against his co-defendants if necessary.
