A man and woman are accused of stealing a woman’s purse from a car, dumping the purse then using her debit card to check into the Deluxe Inn and make purchases at Walmart.

Logan Alexander Earl, 22, of 801 S. Summit St., Nappanee, was booked in the Kosciusko County Jail at 9:23 a.m. Wednesday and faces a Level 6 felony fraud charge and a class A misdemeanor theft charge.

Guadalupe Rangel, 20, of 3570 Lake City Highway, Lot #23, Warsaw, is facing the same charges.

According to the probable cause affidavit filed Dec. 26 in Kosciusko Superior Court III, on Nov. 22, a woman told Warsaw police her debit card had been stolen and multiple fraudulent charges had been made on Nov. 21 and Nov. 22, including one at the Deluxe Inn. When police spoke to an employee at the motel, the employee provided police with the guest information filled out upon check-in and the identification cards used by Earl and Rangel, according to court papers. Surveillance footage from the motel also shows the pair checking in.

Police also received surveillance footage from Walmart showing the pair using the debit card there to purchase items. The affidavit also states that police obtained surveillance footage showing the pair walking past the victim’s car, Earl stopping and taking the purse while Rangel watched, then leaving the area.

Earl’s bond is set at $6,000.
