NORTH MANCHESTER – The Manchester wrestling team hosted the 2020 Spartan Mat Classic on Saturday in Stauffer-Wolfe Arena. The annual tournament featured athletes representing 17 different institutions. Notable teams in attendance included nationally ranked Wabash College, Marian, Ohio Wesleyan, and Indiana Tech.

National power Wabash College finished atop the standings with 161 points, followed by West Liberty and Indiana Tech with 154 and 148, respectively.

The Spartans compiled a strong team performance finishing the day in fourth place with a team score of 92 points.

Sophomore Skyler Gomez was Manchester’s top finisher on Saturday, earning a runner up finish in the 133-pound weight class. Gomez went 3-1 and earned a pair of technical fall victories.

Joel Arney placed 4th in the 157-pound weight class and earned hard-fought points for Manchester by winning two matches by decision and one by fall.

Senior Jordan Napier also earned a fourth-place finish at 141 pounds. Napier pinned a pair of opponents and earned a tech fall victory on Saturday.

Junior Josh Stephenson also earned points for Manchester after earning a fourth-place finish at 125 pounds.

The Spartans will hit the mats again at 9 a.m.  Saturday at the HCAC Duals at Defiance College.
