SYRACUSE – In a possible sectional preview, Wawasee got off to an early 12-point lead at the end of the first quarter Friday night and never looked back, defeating Tippecanoe Valley 56-36 in the boys basketball regular-season finale for both teams at the Hardwood Teepee.

The host Warriors would go on to outscore their guests in each quarter, with both benches clearing as time ran down.

Keaton Dukes paced Wawasee with 17 points and eight rebounds. Ethan Hardy pitched in with 14 points and seven boards, with Austin Miller adding 13 points to the winning effort.

Kameron Salazar and Jaydon Boyer had five points each, and Ethan Carey hit a pair of free throws to secure a spot in the scorebook for the Warriors.

Viking senior Tanner Trippiedi hit five of his seven shots from the floor and was perfect in six tried from the free throw line to finish with a game-high 22 points, accounting for more than 60% of Tippecanoe Valley’s scoring.

Braden Shepherd had seven points for Valley. Freshman Paul Leasure was held to four points, well below his 13 points a game average. Dawson Perkins had a bucket and Nolan Cumberland hit a free throw to polish off the Viking scoring.

In the junior varsity game, Wawaee had three players in double figures in its 54-42 win. Payton Fegler and Collin Roberson had 12 points each, and Gavin Hunziker added 10 points. Brendyn Stump had a game-high 18 points for Tippecanoe Valley.

Both teams now make plans for the Class 3A NorthWood sectional in Nappanee. Tippecanoe Valley (9-13) plays in the opening game of the tournament, taking on Lakeland High School (6-16) at 7 p.m. Tuesday. The Lakers will bring an eight game losing streak with them to Nappanee, and have dropped 10 of their last 12 contests over the last half of the season.

The winner of that game will face Wawasee (13-9) in a semifinal Friday.

The Vikings and Warriors are no strangers to facing off in the postseason; they’ve played one another in the sectional every year since 2014, with the teams splitting the six most recent meetings.

The Vikings won last year, 43-31, in the sectional title game at Wawasee. That was the most lopsided margin in the six-year streak, with the Warriors winning by double digits in 2015 and 2018, and Valley winning 46-44 in 2014 and 47-42 in 2016.
