HUNTERTOWN - Warsaw traveled to Carroll High School for their final regular season game facing an energetic Senior Night Crowd in their host’s field house. The boys in orange and black played gritty, competitive basketball for the first three quarters trailing one of the Fort Wayne area’s top teams 36-33.

Carroll streaked to a 19-4 run in the final stanza, fueled by an 11-0 run through the first 3:05 of the quarter, to clinch a 58-44 win, and finish 17-5 on the regular season without the services of their leading scorer, Jalen Jackson.

Warsaw entered the final frame ready to make things interesting, however the Chargers shook off their earlier free-throw shooting woes by hitting ten straight from the charity stripe and took advantage of their guest’s troubles with the transition game. Each team cleared their benches near the last 90 seconds of the ballgame after Carroll reached its largest lead of the night 57-37.

“We had some good defensive possessions. It would have been nice to play better in the fourth quarter after putting ourselves in a position to make the game very interesting,” said 18-year head coach Doug Ogle.

Warsaw entered the final frame fresh from a good display of balanced team basketball led by Brock Poe’s eight third-quarter points, finishing with 15 points for the night, courtesy of great feeds from Jackson Dawson for a 3-point bucket, and a thread-the-needle pass from Wyatt Amiss in a manner only an all-conference quarterback could execute.

The defensive possessions Ogle mentioned came during a stretch where they held the Chargers scoreless for 5:23 in the second quarter to battle to a 16-16 tie. Trailing 16-11 to start the frame, Jackson Dawson hit a 3 and Brock Poe hit a layup with an assist from Blake Marsh to tie the score at 16 with 3:23 left in the first half.

Eight turnovers in the first ten minutes of the ballgame forced the Tigers to swim upstream before they settled down on both sides of the court. The Chargers netted 16 points off Warsaw’s ball-care troubles by game’s end.

“I felt like we did a lot of good things tonight,” said Ogle. “We competed, our team spirit was good, we made a lot of good plays. Transition defense was an issue.”

Seniors Blake Marsh (eight points), Keagan Larsh (six points) and sophomores Judah Simfukwe (five points) and 6’6” Jackson Dawson (4 points, 5 rebounds and 3 assists) contributed to the Tigers scoring efforts to accompany Poe’s team-high scoring.

The hosts in Huntertown had a balanced attack from Cody Burkey (12 points), Ryan Preston (11 points, all in the second half), and nine points each from IU football commit Raymond Vullmer and Richie Gross.

The junior varsity Tigers finished off their hosts in convincing fashion 36-26, ending their regular season 17-3 overall, and 7-0 in conference play. Freshman guard Jaxson Gould (16 points) and 6’5” Kyle Dawson (nine points) led the offensive attack with the help of Graydon Brath (four points), Tyler Kuhn (three points) and the duo of Jack Yeager and Hunter Rice (two points each).

Warsaw (11-10) ended the regular season having lost six of their last seven games, but they will use the upcoming sectional at Elkhart’s North Side Gym to reverse their regular season fortunes when they face the Goshen RedHawks Wednesday. Tip-off will follow completion of the early game between sectiona host Elkhart Central vs. Penn.

“We’ re going to reset and look forward to Wednesday night,” Ogle said.

Get To Know The Team: Warsaw Captains Q&A
Earlier this week, I had the privilege of going to a Warsaw football practice and speaking with four of the team’s five captains. With so much having been written in recent weeks about their performance on the field, and rightfully so, I wanted to peel back the curtain a bit and ask them some questions about themselves. Each of the four players were asked the same eight questions. Below are each of their answers.

Kosciusko County

Town of Claypool
