Zebras Nip Trojans At The Buzzer

BOURBON – Rochester’s Nicholas Allen hit a three pointer as time expired to give the visiting Zebras a 39-38 non-conference boys basketball win over Triton in the Trojan Trench Tuesday.

Triton’s Ashton Oviedo was fouled driving to the basket, and hit a pair of free throws with 2.7 seconds left to break a 36-all tie.

Rochester then called timeout and set up a play similar to what Valpariaso University ran against Ole Miss in the 1998 NCAA Tournament, with Allen playing the role of Bryce Drew.

Oviedo led the Trojans with 13 points, and Tyler Heckaman added a dozen for the home team. Tyson Yates had six, Keegan Westafer four and Quentin Amsden three points to round out the Triton ledger.

Allen’s buzzer-beater, is fourth trey of the game,  gave him a game-high 14 points.

In the junior varsity contest, Cole McKinney had 13 points and Bruce Johnson added 11 for Triton in its 49-21 wire-to-wire victory.

Triton (10-8) travels to Akron to take on Tippecanoe Valley in a non-conference game at 7:45 p.m. Friday night.
