Buzzer-Beater Gives Wawasee Win Over Goshen
By Noah Tong-
Despite maintaining a 33-21 advantage over Goshen in the third quarter, Wawasee was not destined for an easy senior night victory as Goshen clawed their way back into the game.
Both teams traded off pairs of successful free throws including Goshen’s Drew Hogan, who scored four times from the charity stripe in the last minute.
With the score tied at 47 with five seconds left, Wawasee called three straight timeouts to before settling on the final play of the game.
“The first timeout I was going to see how they guarded the in-bounders, so I was planning on calling a timeout,” said head coach Jon Everingham. “The second one they guarded it well. We used Austin Miller as a decoy and tried to slip Hardy to the basket.”
Miller was a handful for the RedHawks defense all night. The senior scored 28 points, and harrased Goshen ball-handlers relentlessly.
“Everyone is going to see the points, but I think his defensive effort was just as amazing as other end,” said Everingham. “We missed him. He’s been really, really sick with the flu. I’m not even sure he’s going to play tomorrow. He hit some big shots, and played well with a lot of emotion. That’s just the type of player he is.”
All eyes were on Miller after the game’s final timeout, but the game’s final hero was senior Jaydon Boyer.
“When you’re in that situation with no timeouts left we wanted to get the ball to the best player,” Everingham said. “Boyer comes out of nowhere to make an unbelievable play right there.”
Boyer recovered a blocked Miller shot to finish a layup in the dying seconds of the match. The Wawasee benched rushed the court to mob a celebrating Boyer.
Goshen (10-8, 2-5 NLC) saw its three-game winning streak come to an end, and dropped to seventh place in the Northern Lakes Conference.
Wawasee (12-6, 3-4 NLC) accumulated its seventh win at home, and guaranteed a winning season.
“I think it makes it a lot sweeter to know where we’ve come from,” explained Everingham. “These seniors are the first group that has been with me since I got here.
“To get a 12th win, it guarantees you a winning season. That’s really special for our team and our program.”
The five seniors (Ray Lenoir, Miller, Boyer, Marten Kent, and Ethan Hardy) were honored with a start. They combined for 37 points during the evening’s affair.
Goshen’s hosts Class 2A No. 5 Westview (16-3) on Friday.
Wawasee plays at future NLC?member Mishawaka today, whern travels to Westview on Tuesday.
