ELKHART – In their Thursday night game against Elkhart Memorial, the Warsaw Tigers boys basketball team was defeated 59-46. The team is now 2-5 in their last seven games with five games remaining before sectionals.
Both teams got off to strong starts offensively. For Warsaw, juniors Brock Poe and Luke Adamiec accounted for all of their team’s first quarter points, scoring six and eight respectively. Elkhart Memorial spread the ball around, with four players scoring at least three points. Warsaw was a crisp 7-14 from the field, but three makes from beyond the arc put Memorial up 17-14 at the end of the quarter.
The game’s defining period came in the second quarter when Memorial outscored Warsaw 20-10 en route to a 37-24 lead at the half.
“We simply had too many turnovers,” said Warsaw head coach Doug Ogle. “Those turnovers gave them too many baskets in transition. In fact, they scored in transition on a few of our made baskets, which shouldn’t happen. It was sloppy.”
Coming into the game, Memorial’s strength had been their physicality. Against Warsaw, however, they shot 50 percent from three-point range in the first half, making five total. An improving team, Ogle said that Memorial just plain outplayed Warsaw in the game.
“They’re coming on strong in this second half of the season,” said Ogle.
During the second half, Ogle threw out a variety of different lineups in an attempt to keep up with Memorial’s frenetic pace, including lineups featuring players that do not typically get as much playing time
“I had to try to find a group that could get some momentum going,” he said. “What we started with wasn’t doing it. We had to try some variety, but it didn’t pan out.”
Although Warsaw’s different lineups were able to keep the scoring differential at around the same level for the duration of the game, they were unable to close the gap any the second half. The defense stepped up the intensity in the fourth quarter especially, but eight missed shots to open the quarter shut down any chance of a comeback.
“We’re not playing like a good team right now,” said Ogle.
Warsaw’s Adamiec led the team in scoring, scoring 20 on 10-15 shooting. Although he shot well, the rest of the team struggled with their shooting, hitting only 36 percent of their shots. Coupled with their 15 turnovers, it proved to be a losing combination for the Tigers.
Memorial was led in scoring by Malachi Evans, who hit nine of his 11 shots, including three from beyond the arc.
Warsaw will host Plymouth a week from tonight.
