The Raiders beat the Warriors 73-36 Thursday at the Middlebury Madhouse and clinched the 2019-20 Northern Lakes Conference boys basketball championship outright.
“I’m very proud of our team. We battled tonight. We got beat by a very good basketball team,” said Wawasee coach Jon Everingham of Northridge (12-5, 6-0). “I didn’t think we played bad. We did some of the things we wanted to do.
“We took 10 3-pointers in the first half and made just one. They were 9-of-17 and then were pedal to the medal in the second half.
“I don’t think we missed defensive rotations. We challenged their 2-point shots at times. They move the ball really, really well.”
The Warriors, which had their win streak snapped at four, was led offensively by Keaton Dukes (14 points) and Ethan Hardy (13).
Influenza B kept leading scorer Austin Miller plus Jack Stover out of the game for Wawasee (11-6, 2-4). The whole school was shut down Monday for a deep cleaning.
Class 4A No. 14 Northridge canned 17-of-31 shots from 3-point range, with Carter Stoltzfus (4), Sam Smith (3), Clay Stoltzfus (3), Camden Knepp (3), Alex Stauffer (2), Micah Hochstetler (1) and Trevor Brown (1) all contributing to the perimeter show.
“First and foremost, congratulations to Coach (Scott) Radeker and his team for an NLC championship,” said Everingham. “It’s not easy to do that.”
While the Warriors committed 14 turnovers — six in the second quarter — the Raiders made just two and one of those was with about three minutes to play and all the starters out of the game.
“We’ve been trying to stress that the last several games — ball security,” said Radeker, who saw his team push its win streak to seven. “We told them to take care of the ball and we’ve got to get a shot every possession.
Everingham was missing his top two defenders in Miller and Stover.
“Austin Miller is like second in school history in steals,” said Everingham. “We could not force (Northridge) into something they did not want to do.
“The only thing we could do is hope they missed 3-point shots. It sounds crazy, but we were trying to make them shoot 3-point shots. We were rolling the dice. With us being short-handed it was the best chance that we had.
“I though we had a good game plan. I thought maybe they’d have the NLC championship on their mind and maybe they’d come out tight and we could hit some early shots and stay with them until halftime.” The Raiders led 17-6 seven minutes into the game, took a 19-10 edge into the second quarter and were up 41-19 at the break and 61-31 after three quarters.
Northridge plays at Jimtown Saturday, Feb. 8 (11 a.m. junior varsity start) and Goshen goes to Wawasee Friday, Feb. 14.
In Thursday’s JV game, Northridge defeated Wawasee 51-33. Blake Jacobs (13 points) guided the JV Raiders. Landon Gause (12) led the JV Warriors.
