NAPPANEE – The Nappanee Public Library first opened its doors on Feb. 5, 1921, thanks to a donation of $31.50 from a local woman’s organization called The Thursday Club.

Since its opening, the library has served the community with full collections of books and history, technology, programs and more. NPL now has over 80,000 items in the collection, including movies, magazines, audio and digital books and an eclectic mix of small home appliances and equipment to borrow.

The library that started in 1921 and only had a handful of members now serves a lively community with over 10,000 people.

Join the library in 2021 as it looks back on a century of community. From the Roaring ‘20s to the new decades of the 21st century, there will be a lot to celebrate. Look for displays in NPL that highlight each decade, watch for special centennial programs and be sure to check out the Evelyn Lehman Culp Heritage Collection’s displays and exhibits highlighting its history.

While the library reflects on the past century of growth, it also has eyes on a bright future ahead as it creates a dynamic library to serve the community for the next 100 years, according to a news release. For more information, visit nappaneelibrary.org.
