Sacrifices Required

I am writing this letter in response to a local event and a letter that was published several weeks ago.

First, I would like to commend the Kosciusko County Council for denying the request for a $33 million tax abatement by the Louis Dreyfus Co. I can’t understand why local industries feel the need to make such requests. Are they struggling financially or is it a subtle form of extortion? I also wonder who makes up for this loss of county revenue when such requests are approved.

I would also like to respond to Dale Roy Long’s Dec. 9 Pearl Harbor letter describing what it was like here in the United States after the attack on Pearl Harbor and Roosevelt declared war on Japan. How easily we forget the sacrifices that were made during difficult times in our nation’s past.

Can you imagine what the response would be in today’s current political environment if we had to curfew, could use no lights after dark, were only allowed so much gas or food? It is likely that the war would have drug on longer or, worse yet, we would have been defeated. People united in the effort and did what they were called to do here at home to ensure victory.

To put things in perspective, more Americans will die from this pandemic in one year than the four years of the Second World War.

Washing your hands, social distancing and wearing a mask are small tasks of little sacrifice to ensure the safety of our fellow citizens. It is time that we honor the sacrifices made by our ancestors and step up so victory can be achieved in our battle against this virus.
