He was born to Allen and Magdline Judd Burkett on Nov. 26, 1952, in Martin, Ky. On July 25, 1970, Gene married Wilma Barger. They shared 40 years together until the passing of Wilma in 2011.
Gene was a CNC machinist at Zimmer Biomet for 25-plus years. He retired in 2016. After retiring, he was able to travel all over the country. He loved to just pick up and go for a drive.
Gene served his community as a first responder, firefighter and fire chief in Pierceton. Gene loved helping people and was a devoted family man. One of his favorite things to do was going to watch dirt track racing, eating dirt burgers and watching cars sling mud.
Those who survive with wonderful memories to cherish include his daughter, Robin Burkett (partner Kenny Ousley), of Pierceton; two granddaughters: Larkin Hicks (fiance Dee Grady), of Columbia City; and Starlin Hicks (fiance Daniel Jenkins), of Liberty Mills; a beautiful great-granddaughter, Maddilynn Jenkins; and sisters: Carol Sue Akers, of Michigan; Alice Sparks (spouse Jerry), of Sidney; and Liz Campbell, of South Whitley.
He was preceded by his lovely wife, Wilma; his parents; brothers, Don Burkett and Tom Burkett; his brother-in-law, Gordon Akers; and brother-in-law and racing buddy, Tim Campbell.
With the concerns of COVID-19, the family is planning a celebration of life at a later date. McHatton-Sadler Funeral Chapel, Warsaw, is entrusted with arrangements for the family.

Memorial donations may be made to Pierceton Fire Department, P.O. Box 526, Pierceton, IN 46562.
