Maxine was born on July 20, 1918, in Akron, to Orville and Delta Royer. She grew up on a farm in southern Kosciusko County, living with her grandparents, Leonard and Effie Summe. She graduated from Beaver Dam High School in 1936, and then graduated from Manchester College in 1940. After graduation, Maxine was a school teacher at Talma for one year.
On May 3, 1941, she married Kermit B. Leininger, and they moved to Fort Wayne, where for the next 34 years, Kermit was a teacher and later a principal with the Fort Wayne Community Schools. During this time, Maxine was a homemaker fully devoted to the rearing of their three sons. In 2010, Maxine and Kermit moved to Grace Village in Winona Lake, with Kermit passing away in 2011.
In her younger years, Maxine was an avid golfer and played in women leagues at Foster Park. She proudly served as a volunteer at Lutheran Hospital for many years. She also enjoyed playing the piano and organ. Until she was over 100 years old, she remained a passionate Euchre player and loved playing with her grandchildren as well as her dear friends at Grace Village. She will always be remembered for her amazing sense of humor. Maxine was a happy, caring person, who loved her family and friends dearly as they dearly loved her in return. She will be greatly missed, but will always remain in the hearts of her family.
Maxine is survived by her three sons: Steve (Mary Beth), Lawrence, Kan.; Bob (Josie Weber) Lake Gage; and Dan (Cindy) Winona Lake. She is also survived by five grandchildren: Nicholas, John, Jaclyn, Courtney and Eric, as well as 11 great-grandchildren.
Due to COVID-19 restrictions, there will be no visitation or funeral services. The family plans to have a celebration of Maxine's life at a later time.
Interment will be in Covington Memorial Gardens, 8408 Covington Road, Fort Wayne.
