N. Webster Approves Rezoning, Gets Updated On Pump Clogs

NORTH WEBSTER – A rezoning was one of the few items on the North Webster Town Board’s agenda Tuesday evening.

At the Dec. 2 Kosciusko County Area Plan Commission meeting, Scott Kuhn petitioned to rezone the North Webster Day Care ground from a public use and residential district to a commercial district. The property is on the south side of Washington Street in the town of North Webster and zero feet east of Harrison Street in Tippecanoe Township.

Kuhn has a small consignment store, Tangibles, on Ind. 13 in the town of North Webster and wants to move Tangibles to the day care location. The town board submitted a letter to the county’s plan commission in favor of the rezoning. The plan commission unanimously approved recommending to the town board that the rezoning be accepted.

At Tuesday’s town board meeting, President Lisa Strombeck said she had the paperwork from the county before her and the town board just needed to approve a motion rezoning the property. The rezoning was unanimously approved by the board.

“It’ll be a nice big building for you,” she told Kuhn. He replied it actually will be 400 square feet smaller than he has now. “I guess because it’s long, it looks bigger. Narrower maybe,” she said.

Jayne Alger, Inframark utilities manager for the town, reported she got the door hangars made and hung around lift station 2 in the Epworth Forest area. She said they’ve got more door hangars they plan to hang eventually, but the Epworth Forest area was the biggest area for that to be done.

“Hopefully, that will eliminate a lot of the pump clogging up and it should also eliminate some of the overtime. So, we’re keeping our fingers crossed,” Alger told the board.

The hangar states that wet wipes are bio-degradable but not necessarily flushable. Wet wipes, diapers, paper towels, sanitary items are not to be flushed and should be disposed of in a trash receptacle. These items will clog up household sewer lines and the pumps, causing major damage and damage means money.

For questions, the hangar asks that people call North Webster Public Works at 574-834-7241 from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m.

She also reported the generator is on order for Northshore lift station and it probably will be around February when that will be delivered.

Candace Smythe, North Webster Police Department, said officer Sam Paht was released by the doctor Tuesday and will be back Dec. 22. He’s been off since June with an injury he suffered at law enforcement academy.

She said officer Eric Sawyer will be leaving the police department Dec. 22. “We’re accepting applications again,” Smythe said.

She said Town Marshal Greg Church wanted her to ask the town board for 250 hours of overtime for the department for 2021.

“Not that we’ll use it, but it’s good to have in case we go through something like we just did,” Smythe said.

The board unanimously approved the request.

According to the NWPD media report for the month of November, officer hours totaled 583.75; 3,220 miles were driven; and 255.9 gallons of fuel were used.

There were 160 calls for service, including 13 battery, fight, domestic; four criminal mischief; seven theft/conversion/fraud; 12 traffic related; nine accidents/vehicles in ditch; 18 citizen assists or lockouts; and eight agency assist, fire, EMS.

Strombeck reminded everyone that the side-by-sides ride is Saturday for the food pantry.

“So if anybody is wanting to join us in the ride or donate, they are taking donations,” she said. “We welcome anybody to join us.”

She said they will pick up for anyone within a 2-mile radius who wants their donations to be picked up. The machines will be decorated for the holiday.

Donations also can be dropped off at Jill & Jennifer’s Salon, the North Webster Community Center and at the food pantry when it’s open.

For Saturday’s ride, participants should meet at 4 p.m. at the salon and the parade ride starts at 5 p.m.

The town board has a end-of-year meeting at 4:30 p.m. Dec. 29, and its next regularly scheduled meeting is at 6 p.m. Jan. 21.
