Recent news reported the death of Retired Air Force Brig. General Charles Yeager, who was the first pilot to break the sound barrier in the Bell X-1 on October 14, 1949.
Lawrence D. Bell, born in Mentone, was responsible for the manufacturing of the aircraft that Chuck Yeager made in his ever-famous historical flight.
In 1976, Yeager came to Mentone for the kick-off fundraiser to build the Lawrence D. Bell Aircraft Museum. We were highly honored with his presence.
The Lawrence D. Bell Aircraft Museum, located at 210 Oak Street, Mentone, is the home of two Bell Helicopters, one Bell Huey, memorabilia about Yeager and Bell's Collier trophy, with much more pioneer aviation history.
More information can be found on the museum's website at www.bellaircraftmuseum.org.
