Jay Baumgartner was recognized by the Warsaw School Board during its meeting Monday as it was his last meeting as a member.

Baumgartner served eight years on the school board and did not seek re-election this year. Matt Deuel, who was unopposed in the Nov. 3 election for the District 6 seat, will be sworn in Jan. 5 during an organizational meeting.

As senior vice president of financial services at Otis R. Bowen Center for Human Services, Baumgartner offered a wealth of expertise, according to a news release from Warsaw Community School Corporation. Baumgartner brought more than just a financial background; he was also a parent of three Warsaw students.

Board President Heather Reichenbach talked about Baumgartner during the board’s special recognition portion of the meeting. She put a list together in honor of Baumgartner to the beat of “A Few of My Favorite Things” from “The Sound of Music.”

Superintendent Dr. David Hoffert said he was happy for Baumgartner’s transition, but on a personal level, “it’s been very difficult to see you go and to see you walk forward.”

There are three things that meant a lot to Hoffert having Baumgartner on the board, which were Baumgartner’s wisdom, different perspective and his friendship. He thanked Baumgartner for his time, dedication and service as a board member.

Washington STEM Academy Principal Tom Ray talked about the school’s recertification as a science, technology, engineering and mathematics school.

Washington was recertified this school year, he said. “We were the only school, the first school in the state to be recertified by the state,” Ray said.

He explained some of the components of the recertification. The first component was the culture of the school, noting it’s not only about children and parents, but also how teachers continue to learn.

The curriculum is another component of the recertification and how students are applying their learning. Ray said the school uses lakes and streams as part of the school’s curriculum because of the geography in the surrounding area.

Another component is instruction, which encases not only how teachers instruct their classes, but how they help students move forward to help them become productive members of society, Ray said.

All of it is all part of partnerships, Ray said. Even during COVID, Washington wants parents to be part of the school. During the pandemic, Ray said Washington has been using Switcher Studio to show parents what is going on in schools. The application allows for livestreaming for parents to see what is going on at Washington.

Switcher lets the school sync multiple iPhones and iPads to livestream and live-edit video from multiple camera angles, according to information from Switcher Studio’s website. The information can be streamed to such platforms like YouTube.

Ray said this is to help involve parents who cannot be at the school because of work or other reasons.
