By Staff Report-

Jacob Watkins, 17, recently enlisted in the Army National Guard as an 11B infantryman.

The son of Jeffrey and Diane Watkins, Warsaw, he is a junior at Warsaw Community High School and enlisted under the Split Option Training Plan.

He will attend basic training at Fort Benning, Ga., between his junior and senior years of high school. Throughout his senior year, he will be a drilling member of the Army National Guard until he returns to Fort Benning upon his high school graduation with the Class of 2022.

Watkins will receive 100% tuition assistance and the Montgomery GI Bill for his service to the country. He plans to go to Purdue University to study to be an industrial engineer and take part in the ROTC program at Purdue.

“Growing up, I was always around people who served,” he said, including friends and family.

He also is in the JROTC program at WCHS, which has been some of the most fun he’s ever had, he said. He thought he could find more of same enjoyment in the Army as well.
