SYRACUSE – Wawasee Board of School Trustees announced Wednesday it has selected the next superintendent for the school corporation.

Assistant Superintendent Dr. Steve Troyer will replace Superintendent Dr. Tom Edington.

On Nov. 24, Edington announced in a letter to the community that he would make his Dec. 31 retirement official at the Dec. 8 school board meeting. He served as superintendent for 13 years.

A news release from Wawasee on Wednesday stated that the school board met in a closed meeting Tuesday to discuss Edington’s announcement of his intention to retire. The board officially will accept Edington’s retirement at the regular monthly board meeting Tuesday.

“We wish him nothing but the best as he moves toward retirement,” School Board President Rebecca Linnemeier said. “Tom has given Wawasee many great years and for that we are very thankful.”

The remainder of Tuesday’s meeting was dedicated to “moving forward with the next steps in selecting a replacement,” the release states. The board decided Troyer “is the best candidate for superintendent at Wawasee and will make strides in advancing Wawasee to the next level,” the release states.

Board member Don Bokhart said, “This is not a decision we take lightly and look forward to seeing what Dr. Troyer will bring to the table as we proceed over the next few weeks.”

The board will follow the Indiana state code procedures for hiring a new superintendent.

“The next month is a time of transparency and clarity for our school corporation,” said Linnemeier in the release.

Several meetings are scheduled in December. The next regular meeting is Tuesday in the Warrior Room at Wawasee High School, followed by a public hearing Dec. 15 and a special board meeting Dec. 22.

Prior to Troyer’s move to the central office as assistant superintendent, he was principal at Milford School for two years. Before coming to Wawasee, Troyer served seven years as a high school assistant principal and taught Project Lead the Way for seven years prior to that.

Troyer received his Ph.D. in educational administration from Indiana State University in May 2018. He and his wife, Brittany, have two daughters, Kaitlyn and Harlee.
