Two Candidates File For Syracuse Clerk-Treasurer Caucus

SYRACUSE – Two women who both have vast experience with the town of Syracuse have filed as candidates for the clerk-treasurer position.

On Aug. 5, Republican Clerk-Treasurer Paula E. Kehr-Wicker announced her resignation, effective Sept. 27. GOP Chairman Mike Ragan scheduled a caucus for 6 p.m. Sept. 3 at the Syracuse Town Hall Council Chambers, 310 N. Huntington St., Syracuse, to fill that position.

Sunday afternoon, Ragan announced Julie A. Kline, East Wawonaissa Drive, and Virginia A. Cazier, East Benton Street, were the first two candidates to have filed with him for the clerk-treasurer position.

Kline, 70, served as the clerk-treasurer from 2003-15 before retiring.

Asked why she was seeking the position again, Kline said, “I really enjoyed being the clerk-treasurer. I liked the job. I missed doing it, and when the opportunity came, I decided to run again.”

She said her strengths include that she is a certified municipal clerk, is familiar with the requirements of the State Board of Accounts and Department of Local Government Finance and she knows what the job entails and enjoys working with the public.

“A lot of the residents in the town of Syracuse are familiar with me and the job I did previously,” she said.

Cazier, 50, ran against Kehr-Wicker in the Republican primary in 2019, which was Cazier’s first time seeking an elected public office. However, she grew up in Syracuse most of her life and has worked for the town for 23 years.

“I’m here for the long haul,” she said.

She serves now as the administrative assistant to the town manager and utility director. She has helped with payrolls for public works, processed claims for the utility department and works with Town Manager Mike Noe closely.

“I do invoices, process claims, help with budgets for public works. I’ve done town council reports, payroll. I deal with contractors and I communicate with residents when they have problems with their utilities,” Cazier said.

Not only does she know how to work in the office, but she said the clerk-treasurer also must do more than just sit behind a desk – they need to be a part of the community they serve.

“I have a great relationship with my boss. I know more than paperwork. I feel I go above and beyond” the call of duty, she said.

Eligible applicants must be a resident of the town of Syracuse, a Republican in good standing and must not have a felony in their history.

Declarations of candidacy and statements of economic interests are available at the office of Kosciusko County Clerk of the Circuit Court, 121 N. Lake St., Warsaw. Both forms must be notarized and filed with Ragan no later than 72 hours before the appointment, or by 6 p.m., Aug. 31.

For more information, contact Ragan by calling 574-265-1430 or email him at                                                                                                                                                                                                                        [email protected]
