It’s “Get to Tomorrow.”
“Hopefully we can get through all of them,” says 13th-year head coach Rodney Younis of the games on the IHSAA Class 1A Trojans’ schedule. “We want to make memories for these seniors.”
Because of the COVID-19 pandemic, a limited number of pre-sale tickets will be sold for fans to sit in the stands for Triton’s home opener Aug. 28 against LaVille.
The Trojans open the season Friday, Aug. 21 at South Central in Union Mills.
“We’re kind of a small team this year,” says Younis. “Our numbers have dropped. We were up for so long.”
Triton dressed about 40 players on varsity nights in 2019 while going 2-8 overall and 1-6 in the Hoosier North Conference. The current roster has 30 players.
“We won’t have depth on the JV and will go week to week for those games,” says Younis. “On the varsity that won’t effect us one bit.”
Younis has plenty to be positive about, starting with his player’s work ethic.
“The kids have really worked hard and I couldn’t be more pleased,” says Younis. “They’ve been here since July and we were able to get a lot of stuff in.
“Once official practice started we were able to add on instead of starting from ground zero. We have depth at our skill positions which will help us to stay fresh.”
Triton will use variations of the wing-T.
“Getting timing down, that is a big part of our offense,” says Younis. “We need to make sure we have good fakes and carry out those fakes.”
As the season opener approaches, freshman Cole Shively looks to be the starting quarterback, backed up by junior Dominic Smith.
In the mix at tailback are senior Hunter McIntyre (608 yards and three touchdowns rushing plus 12 receptions for 182 yards and one TD in 2019) and freshman Anthony Schuh with sophomores Trace Schuh and Trenton Conley at fullback and senior Lucas Cabrera and junior Jacob Kline at wingback.
Wide receivers include senior Keegan Westhafer and sophomores Amari Snyder and Cole Irvine. Senior Nate Amsden (six receptions for 57 yards and two TDs) and sophomore Evan Briles are vying at tight end.
Interior line candidates are seniors Jeremiah Farrell and Caleb Lemler, juniors Cameron Fairchild and Tyler Amsden and sophomores Cameron Shively, Josh Lemler and Landon Lemler.
Triton’s base defense is a 4-4 with two tackles and two ends in front of four linebackers, two cornerbacks and one safety.
Younis counts Caleb Lemler (39 tackles, including six for loss), Cameron Shively and Josh Lemler in the mix at tackle with Nate Amsden (36 tackles with four for loss), Farrell (36 tackles with nine for loss and two fumble recoveries) and freshman Pierce Brookins at end.
Outside linebackers are Cabrera (59 tackles and one fumble recovery), Kline, Trace Schuh and Anthony Schuh with Westhafter (28 tackles and one interception), Farrell and Tyler Amsden on the inside.
Snyder and Irvine are corners. McIntyre and Cole Shivley are safeties.
The Trojans look to turn to Cabrera and Cole Shively to handle kicking and punting.
Kick-off and punt return chores go to Kline and Snyder.
Triton’s schedule also includes five home games (LaVille Aug. 28, Culver Sept. 18, Pioneer Sept. 25, Knox Oct. 9 and Winamac Oct. 16) and three other road contests (Caston Sept. 4, Bremen Sept. 11 and North Judson Oct. 2). All but South Central and Bremen are conference opponents.
Zach Whittaker (defensive coordinator), Lee Bragg, Jeremy May, Brock Vermillion, Kyle Bell, Matt Arvesen and Brandon Haines are on the Trojans coaching staff.
