Post 49 Celebrates 100 Years Saturday

There have been 89 Post leaders in the last century. The commander roll provided contains some familiar names. Roy Bradbury served two separate terms and current commander John Mort will serve two consecutive terms.
Photographs of the past commanders march down the main hallway upstairs across from past presidents of the Auxiliary.
Standing alone is a painting of Post’s first commander, World War I veteran Ezra Graham, who’s portrait shows him in his later years. Born Aug. 25, 1894, he was the son of Henry W. and Lydia Minerva Cook Graham in Kosciusko County.
He was drafted into the Army in 1917 at the age of 23. He married Glynnora R. Lloyd in 1919 and was elected the first Post 449 commander at age 27. He became the senior member of the Graham, Rasor, Eschbach and Harris Law Firm in Warsaw. He died in March 1962 at the age of 67.
With President Trump’s signature on the Legion Act, July 30, 2019, the extension of the ongoing declared period of war was extended back to December 7, 1941, the bombing of Pearl Harbor. This changes the eligibility requirement for American Legion membership to any veteran serving since that date, which will live in infamy. Previously, Legion membership was limited to declared periods of war.
The Buffalo Street Post welcomes members of the public to many of its events. The dining room is open to everyone. Members of the public can buy alcohol on Saturdays.
The Post’s 100th anniversary celebration on Saturday is from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the Post parking lot and is open to the public. Warsaw Mayor Joe Thallemer will present a proclamation at noon and other guest speakers are scheduled. Food and drink will be provided, along with games and prizes for everyone to enjoy.
New York strip steak dinners will be served from 5 to 7 p.m. with a live band starting at 7 p.m.
