MENTONE – Mentone Town Council approved to vacate an alleyway during its meeting Wednesday.

John Martin said he and his family live at 102 W. Jefferson St. His family is looking to add on to their home to accommodate Martin’s parents, who are 75 and 76. He is looking to have them move in so he and his family can take care of them.

Martin said he owns multiple pieces of property at that address. There is an alleyway to the north of the home between the two pieces of property that he asked the town council to vacate.

Councilwoman Shelly Krueger asked if there was even an alleyway there that they could see. Councilman Tim Croy said no due to trees.

Council President Jill Gross asked if the surveyor needed something from the town. Martin said he might so he can enter everything into the county. Croy said he didn’t know if it had to be through the surveyor, but it had to be recorded through the county. The town council had to approve it and Martin would accrue the cost of anything town attorney Andrew Grossnickle had to draw up saying the town council was vacating the alleyway, Croy said.

Grossnickle asked if the town council had the authority to vacate alleyways. Croy said they did and had done so numerous times. Grossnickle said he’d look into what needed to be prepared and would be in touch with Martin.

In other business, the town council:

• Learned there will be a townwide garage sale Aug. 27-29.

• Learned Scout Troup 3777 is planning on planting a flowering tree in the park on Friday.

• Approved a motion for $10,000 to come out of the general fund under streets/sidewalks/trees to be used for ADA-compliant ramps, maybe down Broadway and Tucker streets.
