Starting in 2010, the Kosciusko County commissioners began honoring one veteran each month as the Veteran of the Month.

Tuesday, they honored Marvin Flanery as the August Veteran of the Month for Kosciusko County for his military service of over 21 years.

Flanery was born in Floyd County, Ky., on Feb. 5, 1950, to Creed and Barbara Flanery. He had 12 brothers and sisters, according to county Veterans Affairs Officer Rich Maron.

The family moved to Silver Lake on Feb. 4, 1963, when Marvin was 12. He attended Silver Lake schools until June 1966 and was part of the last ninth-grade class to attend there.

He went on to attend Warsaw High School, where he graduated June 5, 1969. He enlisted in the U.S. Air Force the day after he graduated and soon left for Air Force Basic Training at Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio, Texas, Maron said.

He married his high school sweetheart Sandra Evans on Nov 1, 1969, and she would join him traveling the U.S. as a military spouse.

He was then sent to Chanute Air Force Base in Champaign County, Ill.

After graduating from tech school, his first duty assignment was 30 miles from home at Grissom Air Force Base near Kokomo. He would then go on a one-year tour to Thailand in 1972, which would be as close as he would get to Vietnam.

After his year in Thailand, he returned to the U.S. and would spend the next 7-1/2 years at KI Sawyer Air Force Base in Michigan’s upper peninsula near Marquette. From there, he would have a three-year tour at Offut Air Force Base in Bellevue, Neb.

His last assignment would take him back to Michigan where he would spend his last 6-1/2 years at Wurtsmith Air Force Base in Oscoda, Mich.

He retired from the Air Force as a master sergeant with 21 years, 3 months and 25 days of service. “But who’s counting, right?” Maron jokingly asked.

He would come back to Kosciusko County and spend the next 19-1/2 years as an employee of Chore Time in Milford, where he would eventually retire in 2010.

Marvin and Sandra are the proud parents of a son and a daughter. They have six grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

After accepting the framed certificate, Flanery said, “If you think about it, since we’ve been back here, our church and our families – it’s all reasons what we do.”
