At 8:01 p.m. Sunday, Warsaw police responded to a two-vehicle crash that happened on Detroit Street, 300 feet south of Canal Street.
According to the crash report, a silver 2011 Chevrolet Avalanche pickup truck, driven by Dennis E. Bradley, 31, of Rochester, was traveling north on Detroit Street at a high rate of speed. That is when Bradley’s truck struck the back end of a black 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee, driven by Kelsey L. Wertenberger, 27, West Main Street, Silver Lake.
A Warsaw police officer was stopped at the intersection at a red light on East Fort Wayne Street at Detroit Street when he saw Bradley’s truck speed through the intersection and change lanes. The officer was getting ready to conduct a traffic stop on Bradley, but then the crash occurred.
After being struck, the front of Wertenberger’s SUV struck a utility pole, lifted up into the air then fell back down as it was spinning counterclockwise.
Wertenberger was taken by ambulance to Parkview Warsaw hospital for complaints of body pain and bruising to her head. A 6-year-old passenger in Wertenberger’s vehicle, Bentlee Wertenberger, complained of leg pain, and a second unidentified passenger had a cut over his left eye.
Bradley was given a breathalyzer test and failed, according to the crash report. He was booked in the Kosciusko County Jail at 9:44 p.m. Sunday and faces charges for reckless driving and operating a vehicle while intoxicated with a prior OWI conviction. His bond was set at $5,250.
A passenger in Bradley’s vehicle, Heather Dawn Horton, 36, of Goshen, complained of leg pain but was then booked in the Kosciusko County Jail at 9:03 p.m. for possession of methamphetamine. Her bond was set at $5,250.
According to the crash report, Horton told Bradley “to look at the clouds” prior to the crash, and that Bradley looked at the clouds. By the time the two stopped “looking at the clouds” they had struck the SUV.
Estimated damage is between $25,000-$50,000.
