He was born on Sept. 15, 1947, in Goshen, to Owen D. and Waneta Amsden Avery.
He was a lifetime Syracuse area resident and attended Syracuse High School. He was married on Dec. 2, 1967, in Pierceton, at the Spring Creek Church of the Brethren to Carol L. Brallier, who survives. He was a hard worker and retired from Forest River in Goshen after 20 years due to failing health. He was formerly employed at Liberty Homes in Syracuse for 22 years.
He was a member of the New Salem Church of the Brethren in Milford, attended the Wawasee Community Bible Church in Milford and his favorite hymn was “Amazing Grace.” He loved spending time with his family, gardening, building things, was an avid NASCAR fan, loved I.U. sports and fishing. He was loved and respected by everyone that knew him.
He will be lovingly remembered and deeply missed by wife, Carol Avery, of Syracuse; daughter, Shelly Avery, of Syracuse; son, Dr. Shane (Tonie) Avery, of Lexington; four grandchildren: Kristani (Lucas) Fisher, Dr. Kayleigh Avery, Kaitlyn Avery and Christopher Avery ; two great-grandsons: Eli and Carson Fisher; two sisters: Sharon (Dewayne) Lemler, of Nappanee; and Esther Fisher, of Pierceton; brother, Fred Avery, of Plymouth; beloved four-legged companion, Zoe Bear.
He was preceded in death by his parents; stepmother, Edith Avery; and five brothers: Richard, Ivan, Charles, Jimmy and David Avery.
Visitation will be from noon to 2 p.m. on Saturday, May 2 at Owen Family Funeral Home, 1001 S. Huntington St., Syracuse. Graveside services will follow on Saturday at 2:30 p.m. on Saturday, May 2 in the Mount Pleasant Cemetery, Milford, with Pastor Dave Winters officiating.
