A Progressive’s Constitution Solution

This is in response to Dr. Chris Magiera’s "Constitution Solution" letter published on April 24.
Dr. Magiera writes that, “... our federal government has been distorted to such a degree by over 120 years of progressive agenda manipulation that it has become, in the language of systems analysis, a ‘Single Point of Failure ...’”
Let’s see, going back 120 years to 1900 would eliminate such “progressive agenda” accomplishments as expanding the right and ability to vote: for women in every state (1920), for 18 year olds (1971), for residents of the District of Columbia (1961) and for African Americans and other minorities (1964). Social Security (1935) and Medicare (1965) would disappear as would federal oversight assuring safety of food and drugs (1906). Segregation in all public spaces, including schools, and discrimination in hiring and housing would still be allowed (not outlawed until 1964.)
As a nonapologetic progressive, I celebrate all of these successes of the “progressive agenda” and challenge Magiera to specify exactly what changes made since 1900 he opposes, suspecting that his concerns relate primarily to sexual orientation and reproductive freedom which could be characterized as religious agenda manipulation.
Progressives too revere and respect the Constitution. I am in total agreement with Magiera’s statement, including the quote from the Constitution, that we should elect officials who “‘shall be bound by oath or affirmation, to support this Constitution.’ That means 100% support, and not a point less.” Yes, I totally agree, and that is one reason Trump should be defeated this year.
Trump has violated Article I Section 9 (emoluments clause) by accepting monies from foreign governments into his personal business. He has violated Article II Section 1 (compensation) by personally profiting from staying at his own properties and collecting government monies from staff and Secret Service also staying there. He has violated Article II Section 3 (take care that the laws be faithfully executed) many times, for example by turning a blind eye when his staff are in violation of the Hatch Act, by failing to implement some aspects of the Affordable Care Act, by spending money for his border wall over expressed prohibition by Congress and by not allowing the IRS to release his tax returns to the Chair of the House Ways and Means Committee as clearly required by law.
In our 2020 elections, vote for a Progressives’ Constitution Solution so we can expand participation in our democracy and build on the last 120 years of improving the health and well-being of all Americans regardless of race, sex, religion or income. Let’s elect men and women who believe our Constitution and laws apply to everyone equally.
